hi guys,

I want to move a folder to external drive A to external drive B.. I tried to drag the fold in lightroom but I wasn't able to move it to another drive. I can drag the folder to hard drive on my laptop though.

It seems lightroom doesn't move files from external drive to another external drive?

so my only option is moving the files through window, and update the folder location in lightroom?

thanks.

I hope it can help (it is not exactly what you want to do, but maybe it can give you some idea)

No, in lightroom you cant drag folders, as the folder structure is an exact copy of your drive. So you move the folder to your HDD and then in Lightoom a question mark will appear on the folder. Just right click folder and then click find missing folder and locate the new location.  Done.

Of course you can drag folders in Lightroom, I do this every time I import to my iMac HDD instead of the server drive. You do it in Library/Folders - just drag&drop in new location. But I never tried this for USB drives, just local and server. You don't have to use the 'Locate missing folders' this way.

You cant, because its an image of your HDD. If you move a folder on your HDD, then LR loses the link with the folder. And you cant drag a folder in LR to another location either because LR has no physical locations.

As of LR 4 this is indeed possible, and it will move the corresponding files on the HDD as well. And if you end up with a ? on the folder, you can re-located as as I mentioned earlier.

I need to read up on some LR features.  :)

Wrong, wrong and wrong ;)

LR will lose the Link to the file if you move it in Finder, it will keep all Info if you move it in Lightroom.

LR knows about all physical locations, maybe you should try open the 'Folders' view on the left side

LR is not an image of your HDD, it is a Database (LR Catalog) with references to the physical locations of the images on your Computer.

I do this quite often, maybe you should try and see that is quite possible to do so ;)

Yes, they added some really neat stuff in LR 4 and 5 :) Can't live without it, many things can be done in LR now that needed PS in the older versions.

Not sure of the differences between a Mac and a PC so I'll respond on what I know, Mac.

You can drag the entire folder from within LR to the new location. If it does not move, check the read/write permissions of the folder you are trying to move it to and make sure you have read/write permission, not just read.

You can also drag the folder in the finder, but LR will lose it. You would then need to right click on the folder in LR and tell it the updated location of the folder. Doing it within LR is the preferred method.

Thats what I meant, in bold, English is not my first language, sometimes words come out but not correctly illustrate what I am trying to say  :)

I don't know on PC, but on Mac if you move a file from an HD to another you don't "move" the file, but you make a "copy" of it.
The result is that you will have the same file on both HDs

The first post of Ron describes a right way to do it, but not the full process because after to have copied the files to a new HD you should erase them from the original HD (or LR will continue to see the files on the original HD)

"So you move the folder to your HDD [and erase the files from the original HD] and then in Lightoom a question mark will appear on the folder. Just right click folder and then click find missing folder and locate the new location.  Done."

Only if you copy them. Of course you can move files on a Mac (and the original will be removed), just hold the cmd-Key while dragging.

This behaviour is actually the same on Windows, standard action in Finder and Explorer is Copy, a Move requires to hold down a key - CMD on Mac, Shift i Windows (so with normal Drag-Drop you are NOT moving, merely copying).

This applies to cross-device operations, if you drag-drop on the same device, it will be a Move on the Mac (and Windows), even without the Cmd-Key.

I thought in LR you couldn't do this, so had to do it in Finder.

It's one of the differences between LR and Bridge/ACR. Have they changed it? Can you view and move other files (like .pdf .doc and excel files) now too?

It's a bit restricted, I think you can only move to/from locations that are known to Lightroom and contain managed files. It's also quite slow, for a large number of files it would be faster to you Finder and then Relocate the images in LR.

I am Mac user from 1984, and I did not know about the cmd/drag shortcut [!!!]  ???  :-[
Thanks a lot for the trick!

in my case i guess maybe from portable hard drive A to portable hard drive B is not possible.. but I think I can drag the folder to laptop hard drive.

But i end up physically move the folder through windows explorer then update the location in lightroom library.
