Title: Lypses-expensive night out?
Post by: shank_ali on February 08, 2009, 14:44
Istockphoto organize meetings for exclusive contributors called Lypses.
Do any other micro stock companies offer similar social get togethers.
I have never had the opportunity to attend a lypse myself and when i  first heard of such a thing i was very interested.
I am now though  very sceptical of the whole idea.
The cost of travel and accommodation seem too high to warrant the effort.
These are highlighted as social gatherings and top models are hired and groups of shooters have a certain period of time to compose their artistic eye over the set.
We do have some very artistic shots coming from lypses and i am sure istockphoto will have more but  will the contributors who attend make money out of the shots taken/accepted at these gatherings???

Do it yourself!

Have 6-10 photographers in your area chip in for a pro model(s) and bring an amateur model, (wife, mother, brother, friend or whatever.) Have a big BBQ in your backyard or a park. Rent a room at a luxury hotel and shoot your models and fellow photographers until the cows come home. Everybody signs a MR for everyone else. Want business shots, have everyone bring or wear a suit for business and rent a conference room at a big hotel.

Fun and it works!

@Lcjtripod, would you not need a property release from the hotel?

Also, what about liability insurance in case someone became injured during the shoot?
I doubt that the hotel would want to take on the liability.
Or course I could be completely mistaken on this point and would love to hear differing opinions.

Even better if someone here knows the answer for certain  :)

For the minilypse that I was involved with the planning, the locations required a certificate of liability. There were about 30 photographers in attendance, four locations, and 20 or so hired models off of craigslist, plus whomever we could wrangle in from passersby that was willing to sign MRs.

I don't recall needing property releases for any of the locations but they were fairly generic, and of course we got permission to shoot there beforehand.

@Whatalife,

Thanks for the clarity.

This can all be as elaborate or as simple as you want.
If logos are visable, yes, a PR would be needed.
Locations can be anyplace, even a vacant warehouse, a park, beach, someones home, etc.
A group of photographers and models could be as small as jut two photographers and two models. It does not have to be an elaborate affair.
Have fun, meet new friends and shoot all day.

I've been to two minilypses with iStock and found them to be two of the best learning experiences I've every had (I am not exclusive). People shared what they knew, there was a seminar at one of them, social events, tons of props, lots of models from Model Mayhem at no cost, swag, and it was subsidies in part by iStock. There were amazing photographers there and if you watched, and absorbed, you could pick up on so many new ideas to build your own ideas. It was a totally "hands-on" learning event. And... I met some really wonderful people.

Best money I ever spent and will continue to attend future ones.

I did think you had to be an exclusive contributor to attend a lypse organised by istockphoto??
I am pleased you enjoyed the events and learnt some more.

There has been an exclusive lypse, but most of them welcome everyone. Remember Leaf went to Malta, as did several other independents from here? Maybe you are thinking about the rule that whatever photos taken during the 'lypse can only be uploaded to istock?

Malta was open to both non exclusives and exclusives.

Leaf, Faber and I attended, we were all non-exclusive at the time, subsequently I became exclusive.

Berlin was open to exclusives only.

The Diamondlypse in Seattle was I think open to only exclusive Diamonds.

Minilypses are open to anyone but the main organiser must be be an exclusive contributor
