Winter dullness set in in early March so we decided to head for the Keys. I made up my mind this year that I was going to turn it into a full scale stock production and my family would be the actors. Four days before we were supposed to go my wife spiked a fever at 102.5 for 3 days straight then it went down a bit but she still felt miserable. We put off the vacation for a few days and then she said lets just go. She was still running a fever so I drove the 14 hours with her and the two boys which were sick as well. Needless to say we were all tired but I am undaunted to get the footage I wanted. They were really good sports and walked miles for me to get to where I wanted to shoot. They only rebeled a little so I had to back off of my aggressive shooting schedule. I am blessed to have a loving and beautiful family. I did a lot of planning for this trip and we all worked hard. Hope it pays off  Here is a small sample from our trip   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZGc2LeZEas&feature=youtu.be

Special Thanks to my beautiful wife and Boys!!

Very nice film, John. Gorgeous, in fact. Gorgeous work. Gorgeous place. Gorgeous family!

You know, whether or not this sells as stock (and I'm betting it will sell very well), you've got a fantastic family keepsake.

Thanks for sharing this!

Martha

Looks very nice. Perfect clip. But horrible background music.  ;D

Background music could be better  ;) And yes my family means the world to me and that is the reason I took the chance to do this full-time in the first place!  Thank-you for the kind words!!

Nice, but this is like I was saying on the other thread.  If we're someplace to relax and vacation, I want the time to be spent having fun, not me giving commands and all.

There are days I lay down the camera and just relax. I did take this vacation with a purpose to shoot but you are very right in giving time with no camera, I make sure I do that often!

Got me to thinking about the horrid music so I made a version to dedicate to my wife and kids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjekgT6g9iE&feature=youtu.be

from 0:22 to 0:26 is very nice for example. The smile is very cool.
Do you cut the clip and sell for microstock?
I do not remember but, Ft for example minimum of 6 seconds duration?
However, well done, good job.

These are all cut for micro between 6 and 30 sec. On my demos I really cut the clips down a lot.

No Free Lunch

The only one giving commands on my vacation is my wife- yelling at me to put the camera away!  ;)

Doesn't look like anyone's working to me.  Though post production usually devolves into labor.  I'm sure the the kids will love the footage decades from now.

Very nice. I have used up what little cred I had with my family a long time ago. They just stare back at me if I ask!

Very nice job and vacation😉 I am sure your clips will sell well. Can I ask you a question? What camera do you use?
Thanks

Congrats. Working full time in stock AND having time (and enjoying family) are often polarizing if you don't create a balance. Seems you've done well in both.....and my hat is off to you.

great job and now you can write off the trip on taxes  8)

impressed that none of those cameras have auto focus or face detection (i assume). i gave up on using my Canon 5dm2 for video action unless wide angle and f/8 or higher and stay back 10 feet. just can't see the LCD well enough with my old eyes in daylight glare to keep stuff in focus.

So i got the Sony HXR-NX3 NXCAM. I do use the Canon for studio stuff.

That is a sweet Sony! I find the 4/3 is the sweet spot for me in video, I shot for several years on a 5d Mark II but never loved shooting with it. I ignore a lot of specs and shoot with what I like. 98% of all those clips are with the Olympus EM1 and all hand held. I find I love the Oly colors right out of the camera and the 5 axis is a dream to shoot with on the fly. I always use the tripod or mono pod with the BMPCC. I use a HMC150 for a lot of commercial work and am looking to upgrade that camera soon. I don't know if I will get something like that Sony (how do you like it) or go with something like the new Canon XC10.

I really like the Sony a lot. I keep it on AUTO and it does the dirty work and I fire away. With three sensors it handles low light well. And has built in ND filters. the footage is kinda flat out of the box but responds well to post grading in FCP. I think they planned it that way. Not as "buttery" as my Canon 5dm2 but everything is in focus and exposure is perfect on the fly. Nice stabilization too. i have used it on manual with fluid head manfrotto and it is a dream what you can do. lightweight and perfect run-and-gun for me.

A $12 LCD viewfinder is a great way to get around that:
