Title: Microstock: where more is less
Post by: sdeva on January 31, 2014, 04:03
Welcome to the world of microstock, where More is Less !!  ???

More content we upload = more power to stock agency = less in commission amount to contributor.

More content we upload = more images go up on sale = less in sale for each of us.

Are contributors feeding way too much content to stock agencies that will eventually lead to our own demise?

Umm.. Guilty, your honor!!

There's no suggestion there.  Just a sad fact of life...

I imagine this observation was made in Egypt about 3,000 years ago.

Hubby: "Look at all these papyrus notebooks we've made. I've got a back room piled high with stock I can't sell."

Wifey: "Well they want shifting. I can't get to the Nile through all that junk."

Hubby: "I'll have to lower prices - otherwise demand will dry up and I'll have to go back to washing camels."

In other words, all this has been said before and will be said again. No offence, but that's how I choose to look at it. It keeps me sane.

I think part of the long-term answer is to be more selective where you send your images. The more the agencies have to compete for our work (as well as for buyers) then the better for us.

When this is extra income next to a day job, I can live with it. If this is your day job, I wouldnt feel so certain about it either. Must be tough.

Whaaaat? You mean that microstock photography is subject to the same laws of supply & demand, increasing standards and international competition ... as pretty much everything else in the world? Breaking news shocker.
