What jpeg compression do you use.  I use 12 on photshop and get pictures of about 4-8mb depending on the image.

I have now heard some people only use 10 so there images are only 1-2mb.

Am i doing overkill??

Does using more compresson (ie lower number) result in less noise since it must flatten the image??

i think lower compression will introduce 'compression artifacts'.  It won't lower the contrast, or 'depth' of the image at all.

Yeah, it is a good question though.  I had been compressing at level 9 for a long time because that is what Myloupe wants it at.  The sizes are drastically smaller than at level 12.  However then I realized that some sites state the image size, and thought it is probably wise to give the buyer the largest image size possible.  Even if they don't see the image size, the buyer will be happier with the better image they get.  So i do everything at quality 12 now, and just wait a few more minutes while ftp'ing.

I used to save my work at 11. But now I save them at 12. Anything less than 10 can see a significant reduction in the quality.

Hi-ho,

I'm using gimp on linux, so can't tell you the 1-12 scale that Photoshop has...

I generally save at '100' which would be the same as 12 in PS, but if the image is larger than 4Mb or so for microstock I put it down a couple of notches.  The lowest I think I've used is 96...  Anything below 85 I can start to see quite bad artifacts in detailed imags, below 75 you can see 'steps' in smooth gradients and solarization of colours creeping in.
