Title: Monochrome
Post by: wins75 on August 24, 2009, 13:33
Do monochrome images sell just as well or less so in your opinion? Looking to see waht other's experiences are and which site seem best to sell monochrome on?

Hi Win,

Most agencies would rather offer their clients color versions of the work and then let the buyer choose what tone or if they want b/w by doing it themselves. It gives them a bigger range of applications. Hope this helps.

Best,
Jonathan

Sometimes it is hard to see what a photo would look like in monochrome when you just upload a color version.  I used to like black & white in the film days but haven't tried much since digital came along.  Doing a search on istock, they can sell very well, perhaps something I need to experiment with.

Yes, they can sell very well.
For example these sold many times:

@Jonathan: There is a big difference between a high quality monochrome toned image and a simple black and white conversion from color. You offer something that can only be done with skill in PS and assume that buyers (if they knew how to) don't have time to do it. Emotions are sometimes much better expressed in monochrome images.

Are there any of the sites that accept monochrome more readily than others and are there any sites that tend to be biased against.
 Thanks for sharing your experiences.

these shots are accepted on all sites, if I remember correctly. I don't think I had trouble getting them accepted. On some sell, on some don't. SS sells these, for sure.

Hi Xalanx,

You might be very right when it comes to the Micro buyer. Their skill levels or even owning PS might not exist. Maybe see if the agency will take different colors of the same shot or a monochrome as well as a color. Might be worth a try. Thanks for the feedback.

Best,
Jonathan

I offer momochrome images sparringly but there are some that will outsell their color counter parts. I find it easier to get them accepted if I flip them so they are not exactly the same image as the color version.
