So I stumbled across Motion Array a couple of nights ago. The name sounds familiar and I'm sure I'd seen it before, but I'm not sure why I'd never been a contributor there. They do video, motion graphics and After Effects templates... no images. So I thought I may as well sign up and see how I get on. It's a subscription site, no direct sales (so low amount per download but hopefully made up on volume)... which isn't exactly ideal, but I thought I'd try it for a few months, see how I get on.

So I submit ten videos as you're only allowed ten items in the review queue at any one time. I get an email 24 hours later saying they need a copy of my ID. I send it over and 24 hours later they've already approved 4 of my items. Better still, less than four hours after my first item was approved, I've already had a sale! Well, 'a download'.

It's pretty good as there's complete transparency on the 'sellers stats page'... it shows the total revenue they've made in that month, the total amount that will be paid out to contributors, how those amounts break down to different item types (videos/templates etc) how many downloads I've had, what percentage of the total downloads that represents, and how much that equates to in real money. No waiting until the end of the month... or the 20th of the following month to find out how much you've made! Just $3.47 for my one download but we'll see how I get on from a volume standpoint.

I'm mildly impressed with them so far... but I'll report back in a month or two.

Hit the $50 payout after 48 hours. Not too shabby, but we'll see how it goes moving forward.

how many clips you sold to get that 50$? from what i seen their plans are a rip-off for the contributor. if you sold more than 3 clips to get 50$ than i consider it lowers the sales on other sites where you can set your own prices. subs sites should not exist and they exist because there are contributors who likes pennies.

i sell clips on p5 and storyblocks and ss...and for p5 i set really high prices and i still sell 10-15 clips a month with a price per clip of 300$. so why would anybody would sell  for pennies that is something i will not understand..just why drag the market price down? this is also the case with photos

I'll respond to the rest of your reply later, just heading out, but I'm curious how many clips you have in your P5 portoflio?

Ok, so on P5 you have 3000 videos, an average of 12.5 sales a month at $300 per download, giving you a total average of $1875 a month... or $0.625 per video, per month.

I have 273 videos, an average of 22 sales a month at $49 per download, giving me a total average of $550 a month... or $2.01 per video, per month.

What can we draw from that.... probably there's many different ways to skin a cat. You could put your prices down and you'd probably get more sales, I could put my prices up and I'd probably get less sales. The total we come out with at the end of the month probably wouldn't change all that much.

My question for you would be... if you can get $300 for a video on P5, then why would you want to get $79 for a video on Shutterstock. The answer to that is probably exactly the same as if I can get $49 for a video on P5, then why would I want to get a few dollars for a video on Motion Array. And the answer to that is that you're exploring new avenues, looking at all the angles, seeing what works and what doesn't work, appealing to different types of buyers... buyers who may not use P5, and trying to diversify your sales.

This whole 'happy to accept pennies for their work' argument doesn't hold up, and it never has done. It would if we were selling our work outright... one sale per item. But everyone seems to conveniently forget that these things can sell multiple times. Sales price means nothing on its own. Go to the bank manager for a loan, and when they ask your annual income... try saying you get $300 per sale. They'll look at you confused. Sale price is great for your sense of worth and inherent greatness, and for impressing your mum, but taken alone, that's about it.

The value of your content, how well you are doing, how much physical money you make can only be calculated from three things... the sale price, your percentage cut, and how many sales you get. $300 per sale with a 100% cut is fantastic... but not if you sell one a year. $5 per sale with a 10% cut is terrible... but not if you sell 100,000 a year.

It's the same reason it doesn't cost you $500,000,000 to go and see the latest blockbuster movie. Scorsese, Spielberg, Villeneuve... they're all complete idiots letting people see their films for $10 a pop. Coke and Pepsi.... costs them millions of dollars to get just one can on the shelves... and they're happy to take a dollar a can?! Idiots, they'll be bankrupt before the year is out.

But still... if people have signed up to Motion Array then they're going to get what they can from Motion Array. In most cases, unless they have nothing at all similar... you're going to accept the best item they have available that meets what you're looking for. You're not going to go to a whole different website, pay for something that's going to cost you money on top of your subscription... just on the off chance that you might find something better than the best thing you already found. Some people might... but I think it's pretty rare. People use the sites they use, and they rarely have time to go to searching all the other sites, that they may or may have not heard of. You must agree with that slightly... I mean, why would people buy your $300 clips over your $79 clips otherwise?

And the thing is... everyone is getting in on this subscription game. Creative Market this year, Envato a couple of years ago, Motion Array a few years ago... all the other places that do subscription sales. This is the way the market is going currently, so it makes sense to want to get a slice of the pie and get in early.

I mean $69 in three days from less than 10% of my portfolio... that's not all that bad. How much do I get per sale? Well that doesn't matter... if you're happy to focus on just the sale price, then I'm happy just to focus on just the total revenue.

I see you can also upload 4K video, is there any benefit to that? Does it increase revenue or sales potential, or is that akin to giving away your hi-res content for pennies?

4k is not higher prices.
A download is a download at Motion Array. And that means you will get some 3.xx $ for a sale.

It says you get 50% of the site's total monthly revenue (adjusted for relative sales of course), how do you know how much you have earned after 48 hours? Do they give you an estimate?

EDIT: Just read your first post a bit more carefully. So you get the sales figures from the previous month of their total sales? So if your sales happen in February, you actually get paid based on (their total) January sales, correct?

It is a estimate.
I had it once that I got several sales a day but my balance decreased about 40$ that day.

Hmm, interesting.

Well, actually, it wouldn't be possible to know your real sales as they happen. So it must be an estimate. That can go down 99%.

I'm assuming it goes on actual numbers, but those actual numbers may alter slightly during the month with new people signing up. But either way, as it's a fixed amount of downloads per membership tier, at a fixed price, it's easy enough to calculate.

As for 4K, you're right... same return, so it just makes it more appealing and more likely to be downloaded.

On $84 now. Have had 19 of my clips approved now... only another 200 to upload! With no noticeable drop in sales anywhere else, I'm hoping this might add another $500+ to my monthly income. I could be wrong though... watch this space!

Well, it also largely depends on the sales of other people. If you have no more sales your average may drop significantly. Let's say the average customer has only used half their credits when you check your estimate. At the end of the month, if they all use up all their credits, and you don't get any more sales, your earnings will drop.

Nice to at least see the current status, and the average probably shouldn't differ TOO MUCH from the $3.50 average.

And you have to feed the beast as it is often new stuff that sells.

You have to manually input info like framerate and codec, plus you only get 10 keywords.  And you have to upload a separate ZIP file of your clips.

All deal breakers for me.

If I recall correctly, sounds a bit like the way artbeatsexpress worked out their payments too?
Although I know they have closing.

I've just noticed that I had $91.74 a couple of hours ago, and now I have $91.67 with the same number of downloads, so it does seem to fluctuate based on the actual amounts.

Possibly the same way Artbeats Express do it, although they don't report your number of downloads or earnings until the first day of the following month. The upside is that the numbers are always 'actual' and you know exactly how much you're going to get paid... downside is you don't know how well you're doing until the month is over.

Do you sell the same clip over and over or are they evenly (more or less) spread out?

Varies quite a bit. From the 19 clips currently online, I have 26 downloads... one clip has 4 downloads, four clips have 3 downloads, three clips have 2 downloads, four clips have 1 download and seven clips have 0 downloads.

I'd like to try it out with some files (even though zipping my files is a hurdle).

But it says I have to upload a preview video, but I have no idea what resolution or file size is needed.

Yeah, I was wondering that. The first few I uploaded were 960x540, but I messaged them to ask while I was waiting for my first batch to be reviewed. They recommended 1080, so that's what I've done since, although they did approve the 540p versions. They watermark the preview for you. Should be MP4.

So yeah, the return per download fluctuates wildly at the beginning of the month depending on the total download figures, and based on what I can tell... it levels out considerably as the month goes on. Like, I've had one sale so far in March and it's showing as $16, whereas my total average for Feb was $3.5385 per download.

So I'm assuming that BlackJacks lost $40 was pretty early on in the month.

No, it was in the midth of the month and I am almost contributing 2 years. But it was only one month with this drastic jump.
