Title: my main concern on 500px
Post by: chris thornton on November 03, 2015, 06:35
I stopped using 500px long time ago, as a professional photographer my main concern was that they: TAKE the TOTAL ownership of uploaded content. Might not be the case for pro account but for the free ones it is in their Terms and Conditions. Recently I was "spammed" to check out a site called YouPic. I must say I really enjoyed the Experience, much more 2015 than 500px. Also as you might have guessed I totally checked out the terms and conditions on YouPic and they do not steal rights to the photos. 500px does unfortunately. I think they will lose many users to the new kid in town. The concentration on YouPic seems to be about inspiration and getting better photos. And the amazing 10 000 views in less than 2 days on my photography was a wow experience.

I see you Just joined today, interesting

Btw here are the terms

You acknowledge that:
By uploading your photographic or graphic works to YouPic you retain full rights to those works that you had prior to uploading.
The license granted to YouPic includes the right to use your Content fully or partially for promotional reasons and to distribute and redistribute your Content to other parties, web-sites, applications, and other entities, provided such Content is attributed to you in accordance with the credits (i.e. username, profile picture, photo title, descriptions, tags, and other accompanying information) if any and as appropriate, all as submitted to YouPic by you;

So by uploading you are in effect giving the license to use your pics as they please as long as they credit you
Wow what a deal!

So, I get that you(pic) steal the terms off a well-established website like 500px, especially seeing that they are quite fair terms, and that someone clearly put a lot of work into them.

What I don't get is that you then try and amateurishly astroturf complaints about those very terms. Did think nobody would compare the YouPic terms to the 500px terms when you say "but YouPic has better terms!"?

Spot the difference:

Quote
"The license granted to 500px includes the right to use your Content fully or partially for promotional reasons and to distribute and redistribute your Content to other parties, web-sites, applications, and other entities, provided such Content is attributed to you in accordance with the credits (i.e. username, profile picture, photo title, descriptions, tags, and other accompanying information) if any and as appropriate, all as submitted to 500px by you;"

You clearly think we are idiots, which I find rather insulting.

You have probably already accepted these conditions:

1. By submitting any Content to Shutterstock, you grant to Shutterstock a worldwide, non-exclusive right and license to reproduce, prepare derivative works incorporating, publicly display, sublicense, sell, advertise and market any Content uploaded by you and accepted by Shutterstock, until this Agreement is terminated as herein provided. You also give permission to Shutterstock to add, modify or remove information related to your Content in order to manage and license such Content.
You are granting Shutterstock the non-exclusive right to license and use your submitted content.

2. You grant Shutterstock a worldwide, non-exclusive right to use your name, display name and Content in connection with Shutterstock's marketing and promotional activities without the payment of any compensation to you. Shutterstock, in the exercise of its discretion, may refrain from any or all of the foregoing without any liability to you.

I'm not a lawyer, but isn't it the same thing, after all?

10.000 views you say? Wow. What are you going to do with them?

Perhaps you have no idea what this forum is about or who the audience is. We sell licenses to our work - views aren't useful unless they turn into sales. It's nice to have people admire our work, but that's not the goal.

I'd agree Jo Ann, views don't put bread on the table or gas in the car. Exposure is nothing. I couldn't find anything about pay? They want me to make their site popular, I should supply free photos, do favorites, work for nothing, and hype the place for exposure?

A world of exposure and points won't buy me a beer.

right on , joanne. i am surprised chris would even say this. wow, you get your photo credits and everyone knows you are a photographer.
this is the same with photo editors in the local newspapers. i once asked if they needed photographs of newsworthy events, to which i got the editor saying the same thing to me, " we don't pay for anything. you get the exposure".
i told him, i already have global exposure of my stock photographs, i don't need any more exposure, only money in my pocket.

imagine such naive mentality from a business man lol

@chris thornton, you made just the same lame mistake as already many newcommers here did. You're telling us a bull@hit about 10k views and other tales. Just say, "we need an advertisement, please check our website".

The concentration on YouPic seems to be about inspiration and getting better photos.
So, it's mainly a filesharing site, not claiming to be primarily an agency or distributor.
No problem with that, it's just that this isn't the best place to advertise such a venture.

It is usual bots visits. Can be third party or ordered by a site. Create false impression of popularity. Nothing to do with "organic" traffic.
