What's the battery life on that one?

Got an HP laptop myself not too long ago during a sale - got it dirt cheap. No wonder the battery run time is less than 2 hours...

all laptops of all brands are actually made in china and taiwan.

sony, apple, dell, hp, acer ... sometimes a few parts come from thailand, malaysia, singapore, and korea, but the
assembly is in Guangdong, shipped worldwide via HongKong.

Apple is done by Foxconn (as iphone and ipad), hp and dell by MITAC, and the list goes on.

end of the story : the only HP thing in your laptop is the HP sticker.

Thanks, all.  I just learned that it is scheduled for delivery on Thursday.  That is good.  It gives me the weekend to learn everything about Windows 7 and transfer everything from this computer.

BTW:  I bought the LapLink PCmover software and cable at the same time.  Any suggestions on making the file/data transfer as smooth as possible?

No idea about battery life ... I use it primarily as a desktop.  Even on the road, I run it from an electrical outlet.

Macronaur:  I was pretty sure that none of the parts were HP but was surprised that it was assembled in China.  Besides, it has been previous service and phone support from HP that sold me.  And,  ;D, the phone support was from the Phillipines.   :o ;D

That's not so friendly for the battery. If you use it for a longer time on an outlet, better remove the battery. A battery anyways lasts only 2-3 years. My HP battery lasted 1.5 years. (HP Pavillion laptop).

Plus the Western quality control, which makes all the difference.

i had 3 HP omnibook so far.

they're strong and reliable.

but try to unmount them and nothing is HP inside, not even the screws.

mainboard == MITAC (taiwan + china)
battery == sony
cpu == intel
ram == ??
hdd == toshiba/etc
TFT == sanyo or hitachi or samsung
touchpad == synaptics
dvd/rw == matsucrapa (panasonic)

so .. what the f... is made by HP ?? the keyboard ? the chassis ? i doubt it.

no western QC as long as they're assembled and tested in Guangdong.

and in the same factory they do Apple, Sony, and Asus if that matter.

japanese in the '70s are to blame for all this madness.

before getting used to plastic craps sold for peanuts
computers were strong and solid as a rock, see the old
IBMs and HPs for instance, nowadays it's all junk as they
can't compete on price and they outsourced everything
in china, vietnam, and india.

same goes for cameras by the way, nikon and canons
are now made in china as well, lenses are made in
thailand or vietnam or even philippines and sold
for premium prices.

try to find me something genuinely made in japan
today.

Zeiss and Leica are still made in germany, as long
as you can pay 10x times more than a similar product
for the sake of being nationalistic.

Thanks for the education, macrosaur.  I'm not sure what I am supposed to do with it, however?
I do think this "made in China HP" will be a much better product than my first portable computer ... a Kaypro II with CP/M operating system and 64K of ram.  Note, that's a "K" not and "M" nor a "G."

I did post earlier about my intentions.  Why didn't you offer advice sooner?   ::)

i owned also a Osbourne One and a 20Kg Compaq "Portable" years ago... they were made in the USA and still up and running
after 20 yrs.

what i'm saying is that there's simply no escape to the made-in-china, ALL computers and camera
are now made in china and the quality is as good as before when they were all made-in-taiwan
or made-in-japan.

what i'm criticizing is the trend started in the late 80s .. everything got smaller and cheaper
but all you get is plastic crap, after all models become obsolete after 6 months of life so
there's also a logic on this.

for the record i'm using a Lenovo laptop, proudly 100% made in china, and it gets the done, would buy it again.

These written forums are not good for interpreting "intent."  I often feel misunderstood and this thread may be an example of my being misunderstood as well as reading your response as an "idiot lesson."   No harm done; no offense intended nor taken.

PS:  I wear New Balance .. They're made in the USA.   ;D

PPS:  I don't think the parts are made in China.  That is simply the assembly point for parts gathered from all over the world.  Not sure where Intel is ... they hire a lot of those little blue people.

only japanese and yanks can do it eh ?

Intel's fabs are in Ireland, Israel and US and their assembly test plants are mostly in SE Asia

How much does this laptop now from China?

I didn't buy it from China, Boby.  I ordered directly from Hewlett Packard ... online.  It shipped from China ... where it was assembled.  About $1900.
