Just got done reading the article from Yuri and his decision to got to Getty/istock from July 2013.

Do the exclusive folks on iStock feel better now that a year ago especially financially? Has the rest of the MS companies gone south financially?

Interested in hearing your thoughts on this big moment from last year.

what? did Mr. Arcurs "join" IStock, Getty... or did he buy the company?
If I were in the throne capacity of Mr. Arcurs, I would not be a contributor, I would start my own agency... and replace the #1 spot with my agency.
But lucky for the #1 agency I am not Yuri Arcurs ;)

King of microstock in not Mike...??

no jokes: I think he saw the future decline of microstock and got a great deal because promotions were becoming less profitable...

As Mr. Arcurs has always a lot of images on the various sites we cannot call him an iStock exclusive.
For me he is no more a dark swindler, and surely not a king

Beppe, like him or not, Mr. Arcurs did not get where he is by sitting on his hands.
he did work hard for the achievement; that much i admire the man and all those who reach that high
in ms (the dolgachov, gagnon, locke, etc).  only regret being i was not there to capitalize on it
in the heydays when ms was just beginning.
as these icons say themselves, "if i had to do it again today, i wouldn't".

Are folks seeing an increase in sales on iStock due to the change? I am too new to come to any conclusions on iStock thus hoping to hear positive news.

Like many others, I have a decreasing chart, at least partly due to beomg undercut by one particular indie [1]; decreasing more steeply since the introduction of subs in April. No suprise there.
[1] Though a fair proportion of indies are also experiencing a downturn.

Who ever said he was "king"? He made the most money but he also spent a ton on staff, facilities, his own site, etc. The king/queen would be the person who has the most in their pocket at the end of the day, and I'd venture a guess that it hasn't been Yuri in a long time.

True.

If I had to bet on who made the most money net from microstock it might be that Scott who did the 'gold guy' illustrations.  For a long time it seemed like half the downloads in microstock were of those gold-guy renders.  I remember guesstimating at one time that Scott was making about $750k per year, and he had virtually no expenses, just a PC running 3DS Max.

Then one day, almost overnight, the gold-guy disappeared from Most Popular searches, Images-Downloaded-Today lists, and This Week's Top 50. In this business it seems that something can become too popular and suddenly no one ever wants to see it again.

After all, how many overexposed smiling Scandinavians can you bear to look at before you can't stand seeing another one?  I think MxR's theory may be right that Yuri Arcurs saw the handwriting on the wall and the End Times coming and when he sold out to Getty he was playing them for suckers.

The person who netted the most money from microstock last year? My guess would be Anja Kaiser.

Why to "be the king" should be only about money?

Exactly. These guys with tens of thousands of images are just a successful company, I personally would hate to work this way. The king is probably some anonymous traveling the world and enjoying life with a passive income that's enough to cover his expenses and get some nice extra cash every month. Hopefully I'll be there in a year.
