Title: Paypal's latest policy updates.
Post by: k_t_g on August 13, 2021, 22:34
Just got an email from PayPal stating the latest policy changes.
Well looks like they're going to start charging for inactive accounts starting some time in November as one of their latest policies. For us Canadians its going to be around 20 dollars. Not happy!  >:(  Every bit I work hard for and it all counts. I don't need some money hungry dirty monkey paws stealing my money.  >:(

Anyways anger and frustration aside ::), do you know if I could just log in now and again and that would solve that issue or do I have to take some other possible drastic action?

Thank you for any reply.

Nope. Just says that they're going to charge starting some time in November. I would like to either find out here or contact them for more info.  :(
Hopefully this issue can be solved simply.
I just hate to well you know have to "juggle" yet again.

So they'll start emptying inactive accounts by 20$ a month and take the money for their own.
Not a nice move and the stiff penalty of 20$ makes it look like they are very greedy.

On the other hand, most of us will have payouts, activity, from various agencies on regular basis.
Monthly or at least a few times per year.
Those accounts would not qualify as inactive, right?

I would assume that too. Sure do hope so!

Inactive Account: What is legal PayPal definition for it? PayPal Policy Update says as of 2021-Nov-20 there will be CAD$20 annual charge for inactive accounts.

So if that's accurate, the charge is annual, not monthly. My guess is, they'll impose it on people who haven't used the service in a year???

Still not wonderful for those it impacts, but at least it's not monthly.

Yeah, I remember banks applying the same tactics. Some banks in my country offered free accounts or debet cards in the past.
But a few years back they started to charge a yearly fee to what they call sleeper accounts or what Paypal now calls inactive accounts.
According to those banks, they had to do it because of dropping interest rates, and they were actually losing money on those sleeper accounts.

Can't say I like it, but on the other hand, what's the point of having money in an inactive bank or paypal account?

You can be glad that in your country it's just for inactive bank accounts. Where I live bank accounts used to be free for years, but a few years back they started charging  for every bank accounts and it's not even little. Way more than the $20 per year PayPal wants. And it's worse - If you store a certain amount on your account, they will even charge you an additional % of that each month. Until last year that amount was over 100.000, so it didn't bother me, because it's not like I have that kind of money just lying around on my bank account, but this year it was lowered drastically to a more realistic amount many people might actually have on their account.

In PayPal's case I am not bothered too much, as I have monthly transactions there, so it won't affect me. I just hope they won't follow suit with traditional bank accounts and start charging everyone just for owning a PayPal account. Especially since they earn money through fees already, so basically the accounts aren't free to begin with.

Well I am trying to save a bit of money. Its not like I make money all the time you know. Trying to after all and this really doesn't help.  :(

And yeah, yeah I know about the banks charging accounts. Mine does it regardless if you have an active account or a not so active account and on a monthly basis they charge.  :(
So I always have to do a bit of juggling ever so often cause well if you don't keep one of your bank accounts active and it goes inactive they will take your money.  >:(

Looks like I'll have to "juggle" this PayPal account as well.  Sigh...
Just have to figure out how.

Ah, yeah, PayPal added the requirement to add a mobile phone number some time ago, because you will now randomly be asked to confirm your log in with a code sent to your mobile.

There is some work around to  temporarily log in, like for example explained here:
https://www.wowthemes.net/login-paypal-account-without-phone-verification/ (https://www.wowthemes.net/login-paypal-account-without-phone-verification/)

However, this is only a one-time solution where you could withdrew your money and you will have to add a phone number eventually. PayPal does not work without a mobile phone number anymore.

Don't worry, we have those too. In fact, the majority of the banks charge a monthly fee of a few Euro here only for having an account. They call themselves "Premium banks" while in reality it becomse increasingly more difficult to find one of their local offices willing to make an appointment with you. Most of the communcation with those banks runs over chatbots, or foreign call centers.

Which is actually a good thing from my point of view. In a world of security breaches and stolen accounts, 2FA became essential in protecting any account that holds sensitive information, like for instance a bank or paypal account.

There's an easy fix for that: buy the cheapest phone you can find, doesn't even need to be a smartphone, and get one of those prepaid sim cards.
You'll only need it to receive the 2FA SMS.

I can only recommend you to also enable it for your other accounts which hold personal and sensitive information.

if the inactive period is 1 yr and you have a balance in paypal, makes little sense to leave it there anyway

another solution is to have MS site(s) deposit to paypal

Wonderful how security will arrive to make everything impossible?

eBay uses their own system, no Paypal for billing and some other things. Paypal is losing business. Of course, stick it to the consumers. I went through weeks or months of trying to verify my account, because the name for selling doesn't match my real name. After dancing on the head of a pin, changing addresses and names and sending them documents, I can finally pay their fees. Maybe that's the IRS but everything is more and more complicated and difficult.

Thanks for the warning, I have a couple of Paypal accounts, for different business ventures and for personal.

ebay uses paypal, just streamlines the process (for once) so you dont see the paypal connection

the easiest solution is to have an agency deposit to paypal, or set up an ongoing payment (eg, for internet) and the 'problem' disappears

I just tried right now and am having the same problem. So I can’t get into my account right now. And I do have a cell phone. There’s no balance at the moment, so not an issue, but I can’t get over how these companies make billions of dollars but can’t even have working websites.  ::)

I've had three stock payouts go through PayPal in the last 30 days, and each payment was processed and delivered to my bank account as easily as ever.

No problem accessing my account to check on them either.

Before PayPal made the change with the mobile phone numbers they sent me like 579946 mails to remind me that I needed to add a mobile phone number so I could continue using my account. They started doing this like half a year before and then sent new mails every few weeks to remind me of this. It was really getting bothersome, as I had added my phone number already. These were automated mails, so everyone should have gotten them, but people need to check the mail accounts they used for their PayPal registration and spam folders regularly.

Thanks for this tip. I didn’t get “like 579946” emails about it, but I likely did get one or two, but I don’t think it made it clear that I HAD to add a phone number in order to access my account. Anyway, fixed now.

Sorry the way I acted the other day. I was getting all frazzled.  :-[ So after awhile I had to just call it quits for the day because I just couldn't think straight anymore. The next day I tried something else that I didn't think to try and I was able to get into my account.(why didn't I think about that in the first place)   Got in and everything was alright. But I still have to think of a solution to the original problem. Thinking of joining a local credit union. I was eventually going to do that anyways. But I will have to first ask a few questions and then find the time to do that. Just so busy these days.  I don't want all my eggs in one basket after all.

But anyways thanks for any advice anyone was trying to give me. Just want to make sure I said that.  :)

Friendly reminder that if you aren't in the US it is long past time to stop using Paypal. Payoneer always gives a much better exchange rate and there are no fees to pay for any of the larger microstock sites. Today PY is offering an exchange rate 1.75% (!!!!!) better than PP. It really is criminal. I have saved somewhere over £300 GBP since May by switching.

Payoneer has an annual fee that will be charged if you did not complete at least one transaction  in the last 12 months. The fee is $29.99.
So at least in regards to the matter this thread is about and to people whom this concerns in the first place, PayPal, that only charge  £9, which equals to $12.39, is the better choice.

The explanation is here : https://www.paypal.com/uk/smarthelp/article/what-is-the-inactivity-fee-faq4427 (https://www.paypal.com/uk/smarthelp/article/what-is-the-inactivity-fee-faq4427)

Simple actions to take (...) to avoid the (inactivity) fee:
- Log-in to your account; or
- Shop wherever PayPal is accepted; or
- Send money to friends & family, or vendors for goods & services; or
- Withdraw money from your account; or
- Donate to a charity with your account

The most difficult thing actually is to be charged an inactivity fee...

i absolutely hate 2FA, but it is really necessary to keep your crap safe.  it makes the whole paypal is quick and easy argument moot but it is a necessary evil

you can complain all you want that you dont have a mobile, but at this point is take it or leave it. 97% of americans have a mobile phone, no company is going to keep archaic and unsecure login measures for a dozen of customers.
