In an alarming new update to its user agreement released this week, PayPal has announced that it will assert copyright ownership over all intellectual property of anyone who uses its payment services.

“When providing us with content or posting content (in each case for publication, whether on- or off-line) using the Services, you grant the PayPal Group a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise any and all copyright, publicity, trademarks, database rights and intellectual property rights you have in the content, in any media known now or in the future. Further, to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law, you waive your moral rights and promise not to assert such rights against the PayPal Group, its sublicensees or assignees. You represent and warrant that none of the following infringe any intellectual property right: your provision of content to us, your posting of content using the Services, and the PayPal Group’s use of such content (including of works derived from it) in connection with the Services.”

This is the good question. They are not precised... Lots of doubts here.

Well, For the time being Paypal=eBay and every time you advertise something on eBay you send 'em your content? But as Paypal and eBay are about to be split, perhaps Paypal is coming up with something of its own....or maybe they're just going to hold a promotional photo-competition.   ;D

Thanks for the link.
I read the terms when they came through and assumed they were going to do something that would require them to have a license for content uploaded.
To be honest it seems everywhere you go on the web these days has some sort of IP grab built into the terms.

that would not be too out of the mark idea . paypal knows lots of stock photographers are using their services, so instead of just using generic images for their site, why not have a photo competition and get the exclusiveness in exchange for a fair price for the winners.
in this sense, it would be better than earning 28 cts or nothing for ever with a creative image that takes time and sense to create.  better than to have some robot reject it as out of focus or some imaginary excuse. doncha think??? i can go for that!
let's wait for something nice from paypal.
if not, we can all choose to get paid by check.

Maybe the brains there noticed the 80 mil that SS paid out and think hmmmmm how can I make a little something off this stock photography thing....   Then they will come to this forum and make a big announcement and we will rip them to shreds. :)

They might feel that they need this sort of thing for the profile picture alone...

Believe me, PayPal is sticking to their core business, payment services, they are not in the slightest getting into the photography business as they have no experience and no business there.

If anything, they (PayPal) are downsizing the company, getting rid of another 2400 people and increasing productivity targets to prepare themselves for a take over by possibly Google. They need to look attractive and cost efficient to potential buyers. Thats my best guess. Carl Icahn has a major influence on the eBay / PayPal future as one of the major stockholders. He wants $$$ and lots of it.

I agree, but it's sad. The trademark "PayPic" would be great!  8)

This is my question too.  All I do with PayPal is pay for stuff and collect payments from customers and agencies.   There's nothing to copyright.   ???
