Do you think it is better to use your own name as a domain name
eg www.johnsmith.com
or something abstract
www.krackukure.com
or something with stock in the name
www.johnsmithstockpics.com
??

I went for a name that conveyed photography but without the word stock in it. I wanted to keep my options for using the name open for other types of work besides stock without having to have two names, two sites, etc. I think that people might think you are limited in what type of photography you do if the word stock is in the name.
just my thoughts

Most pros will use their full name because it becomes their trademark. But unless you're really well known, make sure that your name is common enough that people won't make mistakes typing it. I have my name as a domain name www.yanikchauvin.com but Yanik is not usually spelled that way so a lot of people couldn't find me on Google. So I bought www.IMAGE-Y.com. Now people find me right away. :D

with google et al the actual domain name doesnt matter as much anymore -- people are more ikely to find you by keywords than your domain name.
i choose cascoly [cascades & olympics are the mtns seen from seattle] 25 years ago, and it's served me as a db consultant, online & other computer games, travel seller & photographer
