Because there's a difference between a sharp lens and not so sharp lens. I wouldn't send shots taken 24-105L at any focal length in full size.

There's a difference between "I intentionally shot this out of focus on purpose for an artistic reason" and " I shot this pineapple in my kitchen at night with my macro at 1/10 2.8 handheld and it shifted because of a nearby earthquake".

You mean that isn't an acceptable way of shooting? I mean, I do live in California.  Crap, I need to reshoot my entire port!! ;D

See that 'IS' button on your lens? You might want to use it...

You mean that isn't just for taking IStock exclusive photos? I must try it out to see what it does.

That's right and the Auto setting is for taking photos from the car... Everyone knows that!  ::)

Jens, beautiful images BTW. It must be challenging to place strobes so as to accent only certain parts of such a small model.

John

I have to say Alamy are one of the worst over this and as I type I am in a 30 day limbo awaiting a "Failed QC" notice.

The thing with Alamy especially is that their largest customer base is editorial users - people who seldom if at all print images at sizes large enough for lack of sharpness (or even some minor camera shake for that matter) to be noticeable.

I bet if you were to look at the photographs taken by a lot of newspaper staff photographers, at full size you would find many that are slightly out of focus, ISO noise, not pin sharp or exhibit camera shake - the nature of their work is that often a shot needs to be captured quickly, they need to move quickly and thus a tripod or even a monopod may not be a viable option. Often too it means shooting in bad lighting conditions because in that area you can't arrange a shoot for when the weather is going to be suitable. You just have to pint the camera at the flooded field, the politician getting out of the car or whatever and work with what you are able to capture.

I recall lots of discussions about stuff like this - people who had loads of experience with print uses or standards in other aspects of the photography business - as they couldn't get their head around the rules the micro agencies set.

Bottom line is that the rules don't have to make any sense (although it's certainly nicer when they do) - their sandbox, their standards. I think trying to learn to ignore most rejections is important after you get over the basic hurdles of taking decent images. If an image gets rejected across the board, that's a reason to go look at what you did wrong, but if one agency gets a stick you know where about an image - and they all do this from time to time - just ignore it.
