Hi MSG Folks,

What are the general rules of submitting pics of ships (Freight, Military)? Are they strictly editorial? Can you leave the country flags on them? Recently, I submitted a few and all rejected due to requiring an editorial license even though I removed the Names and other trade marks off the body of the ships. The ships were in public view from the public river but I have never taken such pics before therefore don't know all the rules on this area...

Unofficially since every agency makes their own rules. Someone owns the design rights to every ship, even if it's GI and military contract, someone designed and built it. Think, like an airplane. But since this is the Wild MS regulations, one place might take it, one might refuse, one may see it as Editorial.

I think you will need to upload and find out on an agency by agency basis.

Personally I'd say ALL modern ships are protected, just like trains, planes and automobiles.

merchant ships would be editorial whereas warships would be public property

Military has to be editorial.

Good advice from all- I just don't want to be sued. At least the ships didn't have sun glasses on them lol!

I believe we all know an exclusive contributor that big part of his portfolio goes around planes, again like you have said agencies have their own policies, some are more cautious other less but I certainly don't think that "transportation" has property/trademark issues unless you are talking about a very specific thing

Maybe I wasn't clear, in my levity and brevity.

EMD / GM and the people who make diesel locomotives own the rights to their designs. Airplanes with numbers and identifiable shapes and proprietary designs (including military) Brand name cars, with trademark designs. All logos and identification numbers on anything. Ships are also protected, if they are the main subject of the image. Bicycles, skate boards, skis, scooters, snow mobiles, wave runners, motorcycles. So in a way, yes... transportation.
