Title: Photoshelter ... what?
Post by: BaldricksTrousers on April 17, 2012, 11:39
Has anybody worked out how to use Photoshelter since they made a pig's ear of it last month?

I can't find anything, their tutorials seem to be a waste of time and I even have a suspicion that they have cancelled some of my privileges even though they are still collecting payment from my credit card.

I can't believe that a site that charges people to use it would make itself so completely confusing.

Does anybody know an alternative where I can archive my images and redistribute them via FTP?

It's certainly changed, but once you get your head around the new organisation it's mostly an improvement. More detail needed on the help though, there's a lot that's not very intuitive.

We probably won't get the full benefit until the rest of the updates come along.

I've managed to find the non-intuitive upload and it seems that contrary to the instructions you don't have to create a new folder every time you upload. I don't know how to get rid of the folders I have created.

So far, I haven't been able to find any way of highlighting groups of images to move them about and the outgoing FTP facility seems to have completely disappeared, which is really my only reason for using their hosting service.

With the internet speed where I am it takes about 12 minutes to upload a single image anywhere, so uploading to eight sites takes about 1.5 hours per image or an entire, long working day to upload half-a-dozen shots. I need that FTP relay.

Does anyone know if there are other sites that allow you to FTP groups of files out from the storage site to the micros?

To delete spare folders, highlight the folder in the left panel. Near the top of the right panel is a row of buttons - the rightmost is 'Delete or remove' and that will do the business for you. Do you use the PS desktop uploader? Very much the easy option.

For FTP, select the required images in the middle panel, then Actions > FTP and proceed from there. The Actions dropdown is where most things are, and it's very much context sensitive.

To move files around, it's Actions > Move to another gallery.

Thanks. I'll have another crack at it, then.

Maybe it was the right thing to do.

It seems you have to create new ftp paths for everything, making sure that the ftp prefix is not included.

I was considering photoshelter as a replacement for iweb and mobile me (apple is shutting off mobile me in june).  I would mainly use it for client presentations.  The templetes look nice and the e-commerce photo search and licensing is intriguing but seems functionally disappointing.  It would be fun to develop "my own" site.  The Ktools thing is too complicated... for my limited skills...

In the end I kept iweb but moved my websites to hostgator.  FYI: I chose hostgator based on a positive thread at this site.  The hostgator customer service has been excellent by the way...

I would opt for photoshelter if sales (about 1500 images in my port) would cover the $30- per month standard plan.   I doubt it would... am I wrong?  Is anyone having luck with sales there?

Thanks

I'm not even trying to sell there (though I might one day) but the impression I have is that you need to be actively driving buyers there in order to make money, it seems to be more for people with clients than for those looking for passive sales.

If you have 1500 sellable images and know the basics of Search Engine Optimization you should easily cover costs.

That's interesting. Are you selling stock and the same stuff as on micros or do you take a different approach?

Different approach. I'm IS exclusive so I sell my IS stuff as prints only. I then have some stuff that wouldn't sell in high enough volume in micro so I sell that as RM.

I'm not selling a ton but sales volume is picking up nicely. Plus I only have about 500 images online. The more images I add the more Google seems to favor my site so I'm starting to spend more time on it.

I spend a lot of time on researching and creating content for titles, descriptions and keywording which I think is the most important part of it.
