Author Topic: Picapp free licenced images via links in your blog, anyone heard of them?  (Read 2906 times)

This service called Picapp have licenced images from some big stocksites including Getty, you can use these via hyperlinks in the body of your blog, they carry an advertisment that is how Picapp makes it's money.

What licence would cover this service, they are not transfering images so it is not distrubution, just providing the image via a feed, many subscription sales are web sized for blogs, so what could be the impact on websize image sales if this type of service picks up.  

I was able to link an image of the new york skyline licenced from Getty, but the code link returned the image, but not the attached advert when I previewed it in this post, so I did not include it.

They already have a plug-in for some services.

I have looked again and they are coming from some good stock sites.

I have also looked in the FAQ, they have line which says: an advertising mechanism to facilitate royalties to the content owners, I have emailed them as I do not know of a licence that will facilitate a royalty based on advertising click troughs, it seems that for Getty where some of the images are held will allowed the blanket use of the images in their library to PicApp, that the stock site "wholly owns", this should be be more clearly stated.

This sucks!  Remember when iStock launched something for blog users?  The images would have a link to IS however.

The IS partnership is/was with Vox. I don't know if it's still up and running or not. There was a lot of back and forth when it first came out. Bloggers wanted larger size images and no watermarks, contributors wanted big watermarks and small size images and guarantees that the TOS would be enforced.

In the end no one got what they wanted. We ended up with 3 step click throughs on the images which were a hassle, searches that produced no more than 8 images (so you usually couldn't find your own stuff to but in your blog) and anyone who was caught misusing the images just set their blog to "private" so they didn't get hassled by IS. I will say that bloggers are still looking for imagery for their blogs and since many of them use free services like Blogger to post with they aren't likely to have any desire to pay for images.

The Vox deal was also the first "Do it my way or else" deal that IS came out with. You could opt out of the Vox thing but that would take your name off the list for everything else. For exclusives it meant you could never have POTW, and your work would never be used in IS advertising.

I don't have the link on hand but there was a blog about how bloggers have a hard time finding images. Since most do the blogs on a volunteer basis and use free services like Blogger to write up their blogs they are not about to pay to use an image.
