Title: Public domain images sold as stock
Post by: leaf on August 24, 2007, 03:51: Is this ok? Using a public domain image as a comp. with one of your own

If it got past istock's reviewers I am guessing it must be, but I didn't know it was ok from before.

I've even seen some that have just been jazzed up with colour a bit and have sold very well - I guess most people don't know that they can readily be had for free. NASA's massive image database is the source for images like this one.

I enquired at IS about using public domain stuff when I first started shooting stock (back in December), and they said that although it was allowable "it wasn't really in the spirit of iStock", whatever that means.

Yep, you sure can. As I mentioned above, there are many people who do.

From Wikipedia:

Public domain comprises the body of knowledge and innovation (especially creative works such as writing, art, music, and inventions) in relation to which no person or other legal entity can establish or maintain proprietary interests within a particular legal jurisdiction. This body of information and creativity is considered to be part of a common cultural and intellectual heritage, which, in general, anyone may use or exploit, whether for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

i might have to try that.
