Is this ok? Using a public domain image as a comp. with one of your own
(http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/4082567/2/istockphoto_4082567_world_travel.jpg) (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=4082567)
If it got past istock's reviewers I am guessing it must be, but I didn't know it was ok from before.

Wow, that would open amazing posibilities. Did you mention it to the reviewers, that this is a public domain image?
-
yeah, he put it in the description actually. Click on the image and look what he wrote.
astronaut penguins here we come!!!

:) oh , I got it, I did not notice the watermark, (so used to see it), I thought you want to submit it and see what happens.

There are tons of images that use public domain stuff. I've even seen some that have just been jazzed up with colour a bit and have sold very well - I guess most people don't know that they can readily be had for free. NASA's massive image database is the source for images like this one.
I enquired at IS about using public domain stuff when I first started shooting stock (back in December), and they said that although it was allowable "it wasn't really in the spirit of iStock", whatever that means.

Pardon my ignorance, but does a public domain image means it can be used for whatever we want and even for commercial purposes?

Yep, you sure can. As I mentioned above, there are many people who do.
From Wikipedia:
Public domain comprises the body of knowledge and innovation (especially creative works such as writing, art, music, and inventions) in relation to which no person or other legal entity can establish or maintain proprietary interests within a particular legal jurisdiction. This body of information and creativity is considered to be part of a common cultural and intellectual heritage, which, in general, anyone may use or exploit, whether for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

allright so i guess if needed a background image for composition of several images like this guy did, something from the public domain is ok...
i might have to try that.
