Title: Question about model release around the world
Post by: christiano on December 20, 2017, 10:08
Hi, I have a question : Example, I'm traveling in India, in a remote part of the country where people do not speak English ... they smile at me, want to be photographed. Often, they are also illiterate, so having them sign a realease model causes a problem. I do not do it. It happened to me the same thing in many countries, including China ... I go back home, I have great pictures but no model release ... what are you doing in such a situation?

Editorial.
I don't believe in some very remote places it's possible to have them give 'fully informed consent' when they may have no idea how the images could be used, or the use of Photoshop.

I suggest using the images as documentary editorial.

Why should I sign a model release in case I'm photographed?

One thing is to be photographed, another to want to figure in ads.

Feel free to think about how much you are willing to pay for a release.

If I sign a release, I will have trouble with my employer when my face appears at a competitor's advertisement.

Thank you for your answers, I will focus on editorial photos when residents will be photographed ... I will bring some forms anyway ;-)

To be safe, use the forms in the language of the country. Some agencies specify that. Some also want the original language translated into English too on the MR (Only DT, so probably not worth the effort.)

Less than 25% of the population speak Hindi, and not all of these are literate.

If I rely on Wikipedia, 41% speak Hindi (but can be illiterate) and many speak English (British heritage) ... I believe that with Hindi and English I will be ok. .. otherwise: Editorial!    ;D

My source was wikipedia; <25% speak Hindi and about another c20% speak one of several dialects related to Hindi. Of these, c30% are illiterate, and I know that 'literate' doesn't cover all the ins and outs of a model release.
To be realistic, the most usual use of these images would be editorial.
