Title: Replacing DP - are Canstockphoto or Envato worth it?
Post by: spike on February 18, 2014, 18:05
I'm thinking of deactivating my account on DP (we all know why) and I'm looking into other options.

I submit to SS, IS (here and there), FT, DT, Alamy, P5 and BS. I stopped uploading to BS because the results from that agency are bs for me, in contrast to what the poll here says. It's not even worth to push images there for me.

Anyway, I'm wondering about canstock and photodune. Are they good earners for you, is there any particular image type that goes well on those agencies, as compared to other agencies? They are all rated lower than BS, but then again, so are DP and P5, and I earn a lot more on those agencies, then on BS. So maybe expanding would be a good idea.

Any tips, stories from your own experience? Where is the upload process the easiest (I don't wish to lose time uploading to an agency which will not give results)?

Thanks

Both are low earners and I'd generally say PD is a bit more consistent than CanStock - and except for the occasional bigger royalty sale from Fotosearch (CanStock's parent company) PD pays better most of the time too - no subscriptions and $2.97 for an original size image versus $1.25 for an XL (regular) on CanStock. And CanStock has subs that pay only 25 cents for most, which is another drawback

I'm thinking about leaving DP, too. I'm already on Canstock & Envato - both sites are worth it me. I'm wondering if YayMicro is worth it...

Read this about Canstockphoto before :

I closed my account last week with them for that.
I have nothing wrong to say with Photodune for the moment but very low earning.
But do you really need to replace DP? I am learning it's better to stay with few stock to avoid problems for few money

YAY has next to no sales and their PP program pays as low as 15 cent, so if you like to waste time for no return then I recommend you upload

Canstock is a great earner for me. Go for it.  ;D  Envato/Graphic River is a hassle for me to submit (ridiculous rejections). I don't even bother with them.  :P

They both are not great earners for me.
But I earn 10 times more on Photodune.

The link just leads to the CanStockPhoto subforum?

And thanks to everyone for answers. For those of you who report good earnings with CanStockPhoto: are your portfolios vectors or photos?

Also, PD submitting process is painful? I have a whole portfolio to upload, so I'm wondering how painful exactly? iStock painful? DT painful?

PD submitting process is easy (once you understand how it work), Istock horrible, DT a little painful

PD is pretty painless if your keywords don't contain numbers or long keywords (50 characters I think). The model released images are a bit of a pain - you ftp the releases into a release folder and the images into the images folder. At least you don't have to select categories.

The initial submission is the biggest pain there I think. They also have pretty random rejections as far as I can tell - I haven't really tried to figure out what they want - they get a shot at all my stuff, but they certainly aren't worth changing my images just for them. Mostly they fall into the fire and forget category. Returns are pretty low - a bit lower than Canstock most months, but maybe more steady. on the order of 1/20th of SS and 1/5 of DT for me last year. (for each of those sites - w/ PD a little less than CS)

Ok, if it's easy to process files for both sites, I might test my luck with both of them! If I do, I'll post results here.

@vilainecrevette, I don't really understand your link. Redirects to CanStockPhoto subforum again.

Both, PD and CS, have always been better earners than DP in my case. Uploading is ok - no categorisations. Only model releases are a bit tricky on PD.

From my experience PD tends to favour new content, I always have peaks when uploading lots of images. But their reviewing is mysterious.

CS accepts almost everything... they seem to be more cautious about keywords than image quality.

Canstock works ok for me, my 4th earner right below DP. But then again, I'm mostly about vectors.

History.... CS was one of the first I joined and became useless. I waited a few years then deleted my Port. A year later I tried again. For me ....totally useless and will give up shortly. DP , for me is a good earner. This entire business comes down to cost effectiveness. A 100 Bucks a month [If that] is simply Not cost effective for me . But for some. anything is good. Not for me, and not for me for a long time. I like to give new sites a chance, I give them 6 months and thats it. No movement and Im gone. Been with 39 since 2003. Now  6 for sure and 4 new ones. Thats it. I simply cant spend the time on Maybe anymore or wannabe's. 10 years is enough, especially if Photography is your living and not a hobby.

A 100 a month is a dream for a lot of folks. God Bless. I can't go there.

Wow that's fast speedy fingers :D

Maybe we should make a competition which one makes the fastest deactivating 'how many minutes per hundred files' record at Deposit ;D ;D

My average was 2.37minutes for 100files you beat me already with an average of 1.15minutes needed to deactivate hundred files. Anyone else in it for a challenge? :D

So, a quick update.

I'm thrilled about PD - in three days of March, I have already earned as much as it would take me a month on BigStock.
CanStock, on the other hand, did not produce such a great result, but it's still better than BS.

In conclusion, I'm really glad that I've made this jump and I hope the results remain consistent over a larger period of time!

I buckle out of anything that doesnt give me montly payout OR annoy me to much, that was the case with Istock.
Buckle out means that I delete, to not compete with the agencies who actually earn.
I was with Can and Deposit for a couple of months, but soon deleted. I found Can too amateurish and deposit too smooth.

Yes I think I wanted to say something along these lines JPSDK.

Why Replace Anything?

Work more with the places that pay, instead of pissing away your efforts and time into another ocean of low paying mediocrity.

So lets see, I can replace a low earning site that makes almost nothing, with another low paying site that pays almost nothing, and spend much more time doing it, for little return?

Personal viewpoint. When I cut something, I don't replace. It's gone. I might add a new site if it shows hope or promise, but until that comes along... "Less Is More"

CanStockPhoto noob question - does one need to apply to be included in the fotosearch results?

I see that some of you claim that they get high royalties from fotosearch, so I went to their site (thinking they are the partner/owner of CanStockPhoto) and searched for my images, but none came up.

I don't think you need to do anything. On fotosearch you are the "Value Images", not "Premium"; I think they update every so often, not in real time (but I don't know how often).

Your CanStock image number with a k prefix appears to be the coding and you can search by number so you might try that?

Tried it like that, nope. Guess it takes them some time, then, if there is no need to apply for that kind of distribution...

After my first month on both CanStockPhoto and PD, I can say that I am more than pleased with their performance.

BS always had bs sales for my portfolio and I don't like the way DP is being led, so I quit them. I wasn't worried about the impact of my decision on my earnings, since their combined earnings amount to 3% of my earnings, but I've thought of switching agencies just as an experiment, since I haven't really joined any in last time.

Both CanStockPhoto and PD performed better than DP, with PD being 50% better. I like the site and regular sales and hope it continues. This is my experience so far. :)
