Connie, "FTP" means 'File Transfer Protocol' which is a method for transferring files that's been around for decades, before the internet was around as we know it. It is very reliable and well-known, so it's still the most practical way to move large files around. It is strictly for uploading and downloading files.
What I think you're referring to is EXIF and IPTC, which is the digital 'metadata' that can be stored inside various picture file formats. Along with technical picture data such as shutter speed, time and date, etc., you can also store keywords (which are the most relevant for photo agencies).
