I'm planning a shoot day with a magician in the near future. I'd like to get a deck of RF friendly playing cards. Does such a thing exist or are all "face" cards off limits through out the universe in perpetuity? Thanks

As far as I know, typically the Ace of Spades, Joker, and back design of cards are copyrighted because those are the really unique aspects of a card set. Face cards are often not copyrighted, unless they're clearly different/unique/custom. If you're using a standard deck, you should be fine as long as you don't show those few cards that are copyrighted. If you show the back of a card, it has to be your own design or a design that you have rights to use.

I had a couple of custom decks made a while back. Used my own stock images for the backs: a brick wall pattern and a field of wildflowers. I've only shot a few images with them, but they turned out pretty well.

No worries Sean, I'm a travel, landscape, object shooter who's branching out by doing video hand inserts with a sleight of hand master (who's a friend). I think I'm allergic to models. Seriously, I love your work and appreciate your posts. I'd like to buy you a beer sometime and pry a few of those trade secrets out of you.
Thanks to disorderly for suggesting creating a deck. But I lack the graphic design skills to create convincing jacks, queens and kings. Numbered card are not as much fun visually. I'd like to take a class and get those design skills... someday.

:) Well, disorderly hit it. You just design the back. No need to muck with the numbers and face cards (and you can't on the sites that offer them). Those are mostly accepted as generic, especially face cards.
