Title: Shutterstock (No Download Friday)
Post by: oscarcwilliams on May 12, 2017, 17:40
Not one of my images were downloaded today. (friday).  This has not happened in over (10) years. I am confused on why, why ,why.  Please, I need input from my fellow photographers.

Today's download count at SS was more like a weekend than a Friday (which is typically the slowest weekday as it's already the weekend in Asia/Pacific).

At Fotolia/Adobe, today was lower than Thursday but same as Wednesday, so it wasn't an across-the-board slowdown (like a holiday would be)

Did SS have any outages today?

I think it's all related to the disaster over at YouTube with the advertising scandal, fallout and rule changes.

From one person shows to production companies the ad revenue has been turned off from what I am reading, massive scandal in late March, large number of advertisers left the platform, YT changed the rules to require 10,000 subs now before you can even apply to monetize content, monetization turned off by default, super strict review and screening process before ads are run, add this all up and there is basically zero revenue coming in for anyone using the platform.

Amazing how much content is purchased for projects that run on YT, from educational to documentary to business and everything else and if they aren't making money anymore they are not spending money until this is all figured out.

It's not just SS it's all sites and it's the only thing I can think of, lots of material to read if you Google search it up, the "Youtubers" who do their shows are reporting zero revenue when just before all this they made tens of thousands of dollars.

If this is the case it could be the end of the industry, advertisers aren't going to be coming back to the platform anytime soon, they don't want to risk another situation like what just happened and many simply won't survive, there is talk online of some going bankrupt already.

If YT ceases to be that cash cow then what is left? not enough. simple as that.

Their earning ratings is still very high and sales have slumped.  What am I missing?  Rewards for not performing?

Third best month ever for me, and not even half way through the month.

Reading all this and all doom gloom over at their own forum and all people complaining elsewhere and me got a measly 16 bucks yesterday. Maybe its time to look elsewhere!

Are they under siege? a corporate raid or something or somebody run off with all the loot.

Others except Adobe performing better then normal even middle tier agencies much better!

Nothing new for me.
I do mostly video and every month I have 10 days at SS when the gate are shut and I don't get a single download, while the other 20 days sales are flooding. It has always been like this.
I am not complaining because sales are decent and maybe they have good reasons to do it this way.
Why would they do so? Perhaps they want to keep as many contributor happy as possible, or else they don't want to show up the same images to customers all the time

Got a couple of downloads Friday but number of DLs has dropped a lot last few months. Without SOLs it would be bleak.
