Title: Shutterstock suddenly accepting everything I throw at it.
Post by: elliottcowand on June 20, 2023, 19:29
Something unusual is happening over at Shutterstock.   I usually have a depressing amount of rejections after a long wait.  Today they are accepting my usual type of photos, but accepting EVERYTHING and the review time is nearly instantaneous.

I'm wondering if maybe so many contributors have pulled their portfolios, that the servers are emptying to a level where robot reviews automatically kick in to a less critical review?   Is this a possibility?

I found that Commercial was getting reviewed fast but Editorial less so. All my recent submissions were accepted but, historically, most of mine have been.

For me too, they also accept everything that's not instantly rejected by their Artificial Stupidity algorithm.

Maybe they now want everything and anything for AI dataset?

I think they are just desperate for content to train their AI.
At this point it is not about having content their customers would be interested in buying anymore, it's just about collecting as much data (= our photos, illustrations and videos) as possible.

I'm not sure if the video content on Shutterstock is reviewed by the AI. It all depends on what day of the week, what time and which inspector you get. Monday usually has the most rejections.

Yes, Shutterstock has definitely changed something about the review.

Not a single rejection in the last few weeks. Even landscape images with trees and forests, which were always a submission battle last years for me, go through immediately.

I had 4 images with model releases rejected last week - image and photo on the release were taken within a week of each other but because the model had combed back hair in the release photo but not in the images, they were all rejected! Sorted itself out now by using a different photo on the release.....

I have a feeling they have a new system and sold the duff one to Adobe!

I think that's a good assumption. If it passed the AI, then the reviews are more lenient.

Two possibillities here I think.

The initial AI check is here always checking for noise and stuff (unless you marked it as a re-delivery, I  think). You will get a notification within a few minutes when it's rejected.

Then (if it's not immediately rejected) you are either reviewed by:
1) AI (beta trial or something) or a very quick and lazy reviewer and both seem to accept everything within minutes
or
2) A real reviewer with the usual arbitrary decisions and it will take longer (a couple of days)

You are lucky if it's option one when you passed the initial AI test. Why or when you go via route 1 or 2 is a mystery for me.

The initial AI (sorrry... AS) is badly trained.
It confuses photos with pattern like details for noise/pixelation.
Below is an example of perfectly fine, noise free photo (100% zoom) instantly rejected by the SS AI (sorry... AS). The rejection was always instant, no matter how many times the upload (with or without other changes) was tried.
The same photo was accepted by a human, after 3 days,  once a case number was provided.

yes, i've had similar images rejected en masse for 'exposure', then accepted with a case #

How do you get a case number?

How do you get a case number?

You get one anytime you are getting manually authorized by SS to publish something that is by default rejected. To do so, you need first to contact SS support to dispute the rejection.

In my case, I got, for instance, many cases falling under such reasons:
-instant and constant rejection of pictures due to noise/sharpness/exposure (that's the one I'm using at the moment to resolve that reoccurring problem)
-appealing architectural IP issues (I'm living in a country where the freedom of panorama is extremely large, so SS is usually a bit more liberal)
-restricted events (like festivals, concerts, etc.), where you need to submit to SS credentials[/li][/list]
