Mostly negative comments regarding starting your own stock/video site.

Yes I did check but most of the earlier discussions on the foum are about Photos and NOT Videos and also it has been years since the discussion. Most of them are outdated, so I thought maybe in 2020 there would be new avenues/ platforms, specially in Video, that one could use for creating ones own video stock website.

But seems like there still aren't many choices.

I am trying direct selling via my own website at the moment for both photos and videos.

I decided that rather than set up a shop on my website, I would use an online marketplace and link my products for sale to those listings, to reduce the hassle and also because these marketplaces have an established reputation and their own built-in buyers as well.

I decided against google ads, although I tried it before for another venture years ago. Mainly due to the expense.

One of the main issues, of course, is how to drive traffic to your site, so you have to focus on lots of keyword placement to maximise SEO, and for me, I decided to use social media in lieu of google for advertising and promotion. There is a lot to learn and you have to work on it every day especially in the beginning, at the same time, building your site and studying up on your target audience, etc.

I have only just started, a little over a month ago, and have had one custom work enquiry for video (which came in very quickly) and one photo sale. Not much. But my website, social media, and online marketplace are all getting a lot of views. More than I expected.

So far, unfortunately, they are not translating into a lot of sales, but from everything I have studied up on, it says, you need a lot of listings, a lot of promotion, and to give it 6 months, before you see some good traction.

But the question is of course, if the agencies are struggling, why should we find it easy. However, if you have a specific target audience in mind and like doing a lot of promoting, then it may work. I am giving it the full 6 months to wait and see. Plus I am enjoying it.

Another thing that has proven quite popular is writing and adding some blog articles to my website. Think of the things your target audience would be interested in that you have some experience in and write short blog posts about that and promote them as well on social media. 

There is also a whole range of other digital products that I didn't think of before that you can sell as well. Do some research on that as well.
