I'm researching Stereo 3D technology for work these days and finding more and more pushing towards Stereo 3D technology by the Movie and Gaming industry. It basically means that within 5 years the vast majority of the market will see some kind of Stereo 3D ready device capable of displaying Stereo 3D content.

Here's Stereo 3D applied to photography:

It can be especially effective for landscape and architecture.
The first stereo cameras are getting into the market.

Do you think there could be a future in Stock as well? I would like to try to submit a few Stereo Images and see how they are received.

That was fun and it wasn't too hard to make the "3d" image, although now I'm trying to readjust.

I dunno.  It's a lot of concentration to make it work, and most stock is meant to be quickly viewed and digested.  We won't be walking around with just our eyes trying to make it work, or 3d glasses all the time.

Hi Fran,

I took my kids to see "G-Force" in 3-D yesterday and I have to say they sure have come a long way from when I saw " Creature from the black lagoon in 3-d back in 68'. The effects were awesome. I can't wait to see "Alice in Wonderland" in 3-D Imax in March. "G-force" was a lot of fun.

Best,
Jonathan

I think it more likely stock sites would go for hidden or magic images, since
these are printable and could be purchased for newspapers or magazines.
You could have a 2d preview and a link for the "magic" version.

If you are interested in 3D photography, you might also be interested in lenticular printing:

And here are some examples:

Yes, it's definitely not something for today and surely not for by crossing eyes.
But _if_ the technology is well spread, and nearly everyone will have a Stereo 3D device at home, we might see more website supporting it (so more needs for stereo images), more presentation in 3d (more stereo images).
I know the TV manufacturer are pushing hard on this cause they need something new to sell their hardware :)
They estimate that by the end of 2010 all new TVs will support Stereo 3D.

Jonathan, you should see what I'm working on now: same thing as Avatar in 3D but you can play it in the cinema :)

The best 3D technology available in cinemas nowadays is RealD. Glasses are made of circular polarized material and thanks to this you can tilt your head while watching and you will still see 3D image, but for this you need special glasses and polarized light, which means you cannot use it on any ordinary printed material, and you can't use it to watch some content online. LCD monitors emit polarized light, but it's polarized in other way...so, it's still not applicable.
BTW, I love stereograms :) Can anyone tell me where is the head of the shark on this image? Is it on the left, on the right, or the shark maybe looks toward us?

There's also some technology, though not robust yet, to avoid the use of glasses. There's research going on in this field, I expect that within 10 years we'll all look at 'stuff' in 3D. At least that's the push I see in the industry.
