friends and family seems to be GREAT idea at first, but soon you will realize that it's the WORST idea for shooting stock, especially if the photos start to appear everywhere like billboard, tv, mag, ad etc and you are not paying them.

Don't get me wrong... I would love to pay my models and probably in future I will.
Guys, thanks again for your help!
Cheers

Lisa, I'm 23 y old and I have around 130 photos in my portfolio, only way for me to pay a model is to ask mom and dad to give me the money :)
All of my models are my friends and family and I'm trying to be fair to them as much as I can :)

I think you misread my post.  I didn't say you had to pay models.  I suggested that if you aren't paying them, you should be more generous in giving them a complete set of pictures from the session and allowing them to post on facebook.  Most of my models are friends and family too.  They would think I was pretty stingy if they modeled for free and I wouldn't allow them to put the images on facebook.

I'm glad nobody gave me this advice when I started out.  Nearly all the 7k images in my portfolio are friends, family, or acquaintances, including my most successful models.  And they all started out modeling for free.  Now, of course, I pay them.  They don't resent turning up all over the place, they LOVE it, and they also appreciate that I have compensated them well.

Understood. That's why I take a couple of shots ('couple' because they usually want just a few - I do not limit them) just for them. With those photos they do whatever they want, those are hi res and I photograph them as they like. I thought that was ok, cause as you said "the models aren't really interested in posting the stock concept stuff anyway". This case was exception and I was a bit worried about FB cover photos, google search etc... But I see your point... I decided to downsize the photos and put my logo on them  :)

Why, if you are '23 y old', would you have to ask your parents to pay for your models? I could understand it if you were 13 but not at 23.

We all have to assess the costs of a shoot against the likely payback period from earnings. We all invest income from our earlier work into further shoots in the expectation of making more money from them. You can make plenty of money from microstock without any models and at very low cost or risk other than your time. That's how most of us started. You can then use that income to undertake more costly shoots if that's where you want to go. If the cost/risk ratio is too high then don't do the shoot. Microstock is a business and, like all businesses, it is best to start small and grow as earnings allow. It doesn't need to be funded by parents.

I agree with the giving them free copies for their own use, as pay. Fair trade.

Hey isn't your Husband a famous Pizza Delivery guy?  ;D

I think he is referring to Perfect Resize 7 Pro. It's the updated version of the old Genuine Fractals. The claims of this program are wildly exagerated and would never pass quality control for any upsizing past 150%  Anybody that's ever fooled with it will quickly realize it's limitations. Images would be quickly rejected for overfiltering.

500x500 to 25MP......impossible.
Here's an example using Perfect Resize 7 Pro

Thats shocking..... so what they do is false advertisement.

Actually, if you start off with very hi-res photo the results are much better. But you can't start with a small 500x500 photo and expect miracles.
