Title: Stock photos on facebook?
Post by: 12_Tribes on August 27, 2012, 09:06
I don't pay for my models yet, instead - they get a few photos which I shot just for them, portraits, or whatever they want.
However, friend of mine  asked me to give him photos from last session (which are online) to put them on facebook. I'm not sure what to do...Maybe downsize and put my logo on them? Would there be any problems with agencies?
Just to be sure :) Thanks

Unless they are exclusive on a micro site, do whatever you want with them.

Small size with watermark and low rez so it cannot be blown up without pixelation.

Any image can be upsized without any loss of detail whatsoever they have software that does just that and can take a 500x500 image up to easily a 25MP image that is perfect.

is that for real? a 0.25MP picture becoming a 25MP without any lose? gotta be a joke!

And as you have already pointed out, watermarks are easily removed. So they might as well just steal thumbs directly from the agencies. Easier to search for what they want.

Example please. Show us that "perfect" 25MP photo that was upsized from 500x500.

I pay my models AND give them a cd of all images from the session, downsized to 1200 pixels on the long side.  It's large enough to make a decent sized print.

I really don't have a problem with my models posting images to facebook.  No legitimate buyer is going to lift them from facebook, and so far the models aren't really interested in posting the stock concept stuff anyway.  They mostly just post the portraits.

The only prohibition I place on their using them is that they can't sell them or post them for free download on a stock site, deviantart, flikr etc.  If you won't let them post the pictures anywhere online then you have not given them any value at all for their time.

If you aren't paying your models, and their only compensation is the photos, then they should be able to use them how they want, short of redistributing them themselves.

If they really want to steal a photo, we all know where they can go for full sized and full rez. They have at least 1 "Hero" to find them. I can do 600 px on the longest size and my image mark (can't really call it a watermark. Mine is solid and placed in a area that might make it rough for content aware to match up...lol) and save at 6 on quality, they are going to have a rough time making a full size without it pixelating out. They would be better off finding their "Hero" shot or license it legally.

Size it down to 720 pixels long edge (optimized for Facebook) and put your watermark on the image...the watermark may lead you to more business.

i shoot with an 18MP camera and SS will upsize some of my files as a tiff to over 60MP!

No no secret anyone can find and use it if they know how to find it and know how to use the web to find it or just PM me and i will give it to you!

Other people got highly pissed off at me for posting the link because anyone myself included could by a small file over on FT (for example) and then upsize it and sell it as POD's.

I wonder why people pay for larger sizes ;D even the OD on SS are dumb, why not a size only? ;D

I think he is referring to Perfect Resize 7 Pro. It's the updated version of the old Genuine Fractals. The claims of this program are wildly exagerated and would never pass quality control for any upsizing past 150%  Anybody that's ever fooled with it will quickly realize it's limitations. Images would be quickly rejected for overfiltering.

500x500 to 25MP......impossible.
Here's an example using Perfect Resize 7 Pro

OT: Facebook just deleted my video (for my friends only) and sent me warning because of possible copyright infringement because my 30 sec video of my baby contains some music. OK they are right, next time I will sing my own song.
What makes me angry is that everybody's rights are protected except those of photographers and illustrators. Grrrr.

That company is great at hype. The old adverts and their examples made you imagine it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but numerous examples in the Photo Press and online photo sites showed that upsizing in newer versions of PS was at least as good and often better.

Lisa, I'm 23 y old and I have around 130 photos in my portfolio, only way for me to pay a model is to ask mom and dad to give me the money :)
All of my models are my friends and family and I'm trying to be fair to them as much as I can :)

friends and family seems to be GREAT idea at first, but soon you will realize that it's the WORST idea for shooting stock, especially if the photos start to appear everywhere like billboard, tv, mag, ad etc and you are not paying them.

I think you misread my post.  I didn't say you had to pay models.  I suggested that if you aren't paying them, you should be more generous in giving them a complete set of pictures from the session and allowing them to post on facebook.  Most of my models are friends and family too.  They would think I was pretty stingy if they modeled for free and I wouldn't allow them to put the images on facebook.

I'm glad nobody gave me this advice when I started out.  Nearly all the 7k images in my portfolio are friends, family, or acquaintances, including my most successful models.  And they all started out modeling for free.  Now, of course, I pay them.  They don't resent turning up all over the place, they LOVE it, and they also appreciate that I have compensated them well.

Understood. That's why I take a couple of shots ('couple' because they usually want just a few - I do not limit them) just for them. With those photos they do whatever they want, those are hi res and I photograph them as they like. I thought that was ok, cause as you said "the models aren't really interested in posting the stock concept stuff anyway". This case was exception and I was a bit worried about FB cover photos, google search etc... But I see your point... I decided to downsize the photos and put my logo on them  :)

Why, if you are '23 y old', would you have to ask your parents to pay for your models? I could understand it if you were 13 but not at 23.

We all have to assess the costs of a shoot against the likely payback period from earnings. We all invest income from our earlier work into further shoots in the expectation of making more money from them. You can make plenty of money from microstock without any models and at very low cost or risk other than your time. That's how most of us started. You can then use that income to undertake more costly shoots if that's where you want to go. If the cost/risk ratio is too high then don't do the shoot. Microstock is a business and, like all businesses, it is best to start small and grow as earnings allow. It doesn't need to be funded by parents.

Actually, if you start off with very hi-res photo the results are much better. But you can't start with a small 500x500 photo and expect miracles.
