Title: Stock source: happenstance or planned?
Post by: gloch on February 25, 2014, 10:01
I am just curious on how much of producer's portfolios are planned/produced and how much are just afterthought captures? I am just starting to build a portfolio and I am looking at making deliberate efforts on it.

I think most people plan to get afterthought captures when on a shoot!

In other words, planning to capture stock imagery while on a vacation or attending an event for example? I just wonder if there are many who deliberately setup a shoot for the sole purpose of creating stock images?

I do a lot of very varied commercial shoots, Furniture catalogs,Corporate headshots,Insurance company annual reports etc, etc, etc, etc. in the down time I always look for things that I can use in composites especially office surroundings I can use later by dropping in a business man or woman that i shot years ago. Getting my daily rate is one thing but keeping an eye out for a "Element" I can use has paid off many times.

The well planned shots are usually Good - the afterthought ones are sometimes Brilliant!

Mix of both for me, though I'd say about 75% is planned.
Studio shots are planned and sell regularly.
When I travel I generally have a stock shooting list in mind, but I'm also open to inspiration and find that the occasional grab shot does well. Need to keep the creative juices flowing and be open to what's out there.
Some sales from iPhone shots which are all grab shots.
I also try to keep my eyes open for stock photo potential when I'm shooting assignments - editorial assignments are obvious, but I also shoot architecture, food, other ads and seek out elements that I can use later.
