Hi all,

how about we collect info together about alternative video stock sites.

If I put on my buyers hat for video, with only 30 million clips compared to probably 1 billion stock photos, in my opinion absolutely everything is missing.

And yet the video crowd is already complaining as if their party in the market is already over.

When this industry had only 30 million RF files, or even 30 million micro RF files, I was making 4-6k a month with less than 3000 photos. I understand that there is a much larger buyer group for photos, but simply by how much of the world is covered with videoit is a wide open planet with literally everything missing. At least from my perspective.

Obviously agencies selling our footage for 30 cents doesnt help. And I dont care if it is a special one day social media license.it is simply not enough if it is a professionally produced clip. For my iphone snapshots, I can live with that, but all files are not created equal. Good footage is more expensive and time consuming to produce.

But because of that and unlike the photo market making good video clips for fun as a hobby is really not that common. It is a niche hobby and the number of people who become really good at it are unlikely to be ready to give away their files for exposure.

High quality video producers have much more control over their market than we do in photography. Although even the photo producers have some control, if an agency offers more money or better workflow over 2-3 years you will see a strong difference in the content they offer. And the customers will always go where the best content is.

So, which other platforms are out there? Are there niche video agencies, maybe for exclusive content or specialized content that are interesting to work with?

For agency owners - why not come in here and introduce yourselves?

Many people are ready to branch out and look around, now that the traditional agencies are buying each other and consolidation usually means less choices and less income for producers.

Supplying several agencies with more specialized exclusive work is expensive for us, but I am sure many reading here will be ready to support smaller and new places.

If agencies come here and explain clearly what they are looking for, they can build up a larger and more diverse community.

It is the right time to come in and pick up good content or new suppliers looking for more balance in the market.

On youtube there is someone praising filmsupply and artgrid. He made 10200 dollar in 2021 with 1800 (?) clips and no new uploads in the year.

Anyone else with experience?

In the beginning almost every entry level photographer was making 4-6K with 3000 images. Many of them would not have met the skill level required to pass the brutal editing imposed for acceptance of images at the time, thus microstock with no editing criteria and ridiculously low pricing for unlimited use brought us to where we are today. ten cents on the dollar and the same goes with video.

Photos and video today are a mass produced commodity. Top quality today gets rejected in the roulette wheel of 'approved' and total junk gets 'approved' on the same roulette wheel that should reject the content. It's a complete crap shoot.

There is an old saying "water seeks it's own level" and the industry as a whole and the masters who control it have found that level. Let's be real, contributors are in an era where we accept 0.10c  royalties from corporate agencies, we sell our content for $5 to corporate agencies for unlimited free downloads under the guise that it will lead to more downloads when in fact it is for their marketing needs, not yours.

Excellent point that a lot of people don't seem to grasp.

There still are people making good money with photos, so I very obviously disagree.

The biggest competition for photos have always been the free images that are sold with a cc license on flickr. That was true 20 years ago and is still true now.

And yet, there are still people who make good money with photo. And still live from it.

But video is at a completely different stage, only 30 million clips available.

And the number of people sharing good quality videofiles for free is minuscule.

So I am interested in exploring more video agencies, thus this thread.

There is always Dissolve.

They are a premium footage agency (and photos too, but their focus is more on video).  They have some big name companies as customers. They are hard to get into but if you have what they are looking for, then there's decent money to be made there.  The guy who taught me video used to sell a lot of footage there.

I have heard very mixed things about dissolve, in fact some people I respect warned me to not work with them.

Obviously I don't know details, but I take these warnings seriously.

Of course this was a few years ago, so maybe things have changed. And who knows if they would even take me.

This is why I am trying to get some honest feedback and experiences about filmsuppy, artgrid or any other place whre you send exclusive content.

Video is still in very early stages, so maybe being non exclusive, with perhaps a specialized exclusive port on pond5 is currently the way to go.

Before Shutterstock bought pond5 i considered pond5 to be near perfect as an agency.

And before the changes at SS in 2020, I might have looked forward to the takeover, because I was a big fan of the old Shutterstock.

But here we are, so it is time to explore the wider video world.
