Hi All,

Well with our shutting the studio down this month we are having a sale on all our props we can't take on location. Wood flooring ( two kinds ), 3 moveable false walls ( built by a theatrical builder, very cool ) Just about the entire 2007 line of Ikea furniture that was only used by beautiful people.

Colored backdrops, storage equipment chests. Pretty much everything but lighting.
I even have a couple 645 AFD bodies and lenses, a Nikon f4 system with lenses an F2 body with Polaroid back. ( do they even make Polaroid anymore ) oh yea, and a Mamiya RZ system fully loaded. Stuff like that just none of our lights or our digital gear. I am located in Edmond's Washington just north of Seattle and we will be having the sale next week on Friday if anyone is local and wants to stop by just PM me.
The prices will be super good because we don't want to end the day filling the local land fill. Let me know if you are interested. The latter the day gets the prices will go even lower ( free stuff )

How come you are shutting down your studio? (I would kill for a studio)

(if I'm being to noisy, you don't have to disclose, I am just curious) Is the economy in the US that bad?

Hi Penny,

Thanks for asking. Everything is great for my family and myself. I have been producing for 20 years and it is time to slow down a bit and enjoy life. You might say we just made it out the back door of Macro before the house fell down. We have 14,000 images in the market that will continue to make a good return for a few years.
I will still be shooting just not as much as before and only on location which is my favorite, 4 times a month or so. If I need a studio I have friends in town that will help me out but I want to get back to location work, my family and some personal time. I love to play sports so probably a bit of Soccer and some Golf. I have two boys that I want to see grow up and be there as much as I can while they still think I'm cool.

Maybe go back to school there are many things I still want to learn. Maybe go back to teach again. It is a great place to be right now and I am a very lucky man.

I have three 4x5's I am not even putting out for sale. I don't know what anyone would think when they saw them.

Thanks but maybe a nice decoration for the study or a good door stop. No better yet keep it, you never know what will be in again some day. My sons wear clothing I never thought would make it back.

I would kind of like to go out and shoot with one of mine again if I can still load the film the right direction in the holder. Isn't it notch at the bottom right?

Hi Noam,

That is part of the reason I haven't gotten rid of mine. For the lifestyle work I do now I can't use it. I was schooled on large format and I love it for certain things. The first half of my career was spent under a dark cloth until I discovered Stock. Soon maybe I will want to shoot with one again but I really should get rid of the other two.
The reason for so many bodies in the days before Photoshop when you wanted to add a layer to your image you had to set up separate 4x5's for each set or " layer " of the shot and line them up by drawing on a plastic sheet over the back glass of each camera. Then you would shoot the first set pull the film load it in the camera at the next set and so on and so on till you had you image completed.
I also have a full light painting system. You might have to look that one up on google. A very hi-powered daylight balanced flashlight with lots of different attachments to change the quality of the light that was big in the early 90"s. You paint the light while the set is dark and you just leave the shutter open while the film exposes. The style is dated now but it gave more color saturation to your subject than any other light I have ever used and an almost illustrate look. Think about a 15 minute exposure where you painted the entire set with light by hand to get one frame.
Kind of rambling here but when I think of what we had to do just to add steam to a cup of coffee compared to today it is mind boggling to try and guess where we will be 20 years from now.

I know exactly what are talking about. I have spent many hours under that black cloth with my Linhof Technika.
I always wanted an Hose Master, but had to settle for a simple flashlight/torch with a blue gelatin over it foe color temp correction.
I took many still life this way - darkness in the studio and me with that strong torch (4 AA batteries) "dancing" around the set illuminating my subject. I took many food images this way. I have put some 4x5 scans on my microstock porfolio, here are some examples:

You know only the other week I prepared one of these 8X10 mounted a Schneider wide.angle etc.
It was pure MAGIC!!! theres nothing like it.

I am very impressed by you knowing what a Hose Master is and that you used to paint with light as well. You have been shooting for a long time. I will dig up one of my old painted images and send it to you, it was a lot of fun. By the way really beautiful photos you offered, thx.

I was thinking the same thing as soon as life calms. It really makes you think about composing an image and slowing down to think. Very soothing if there isn't an art director on your shoulder waiting for the next Polaroid

No really, we are starting but you will find great deals. We never intended to sell this stuff just trying to keep it out of the land fill. So make us an offer.

On the other side I just wanted you to all know that even though our studio is closing this is just a transition. I am slowing down from producing 10-12,000 images a year to 4-6,000 for next year so still plenty to come from AVAVA and the gang here just all on location for the coming year. I have been in and out of studios 3 times over the past 20 years and will probably end up buried in one some day. Not getting out of the biz at all just slowing down to enjoy some time with my kids before they are old and gone.
