Title: Submit in German?
Post by: Fyletto on October 05, 2014, 14:22
Hi guys, I just wonder... One of my friends does not speak English, is a long-time photographer, and wants to try microstock. However, I am not sure which sites allow contributors to upload with German metadata as German is the only international language he speaks. So far I am only sure about Panthermedia. Does any of you know if sites like Shutterstock, Fotolia, etc. allow submitting in German? Thanks

I don't think they do, and he will only attract buyers searching in German if he finds an agency that does. Sites like Shutterstock translate keywords from English to other languages. So he will still be competing with all the other images. I don't think he will sell a lot with keywords in German, making it a waste of time. He is better off learning English, or using a keywording service. Istock is a no go with their CV, Shutterstock advices only English keywords, and that means top 2 agencies are out for him.

Fotolia is the biggest agency in Germany and they allow you to describe and keyword in German. It is even recommended if you have content for the German language market. There is also a very active German forum with good moderators.

He might also want to check out the blog of Robert Kneschke

As cobalt said, Fotolia would be the no1 choice of the big agencies.

But there are many more German agencies besides Panthermedia:
Zoonar
Shotshop
Pitopia
Clipdealer
Bildunion
Coverpicture
...

German is NOT an international language  ;D ;D

Historically speaking, English is just a German dialect...
The Angles and the Saxons brought their language with them when they conquered Britain (which was Celtic at that time).

It is the language of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and spoken by over 100 million people in Europe as a mother tongue.

You might also be surprised how many people study German as a second language instead of French or Spanish.

Itīs not English, but we arenīt doing that badly...

German is NOT an international language  ;D ;D

The most widely spoken language in Europe, and there are many German-speaking inhabitants everywhere in the world. And - English is actually nothing more than bad German, isn't it?  8) 8)

Why would anyone advice the likes of Fotolia and Depositphotos? It is beyond me to advice a friend to get in bed with the enemy. Sorry.

There are artists making over 10 000 dollars a month at Fotolia. They pay up to 60% for exclusive content and up to 40% for indy content. They also have an extremly active community and organize workshops and meetups. They even have a gallery in Berlin to showcase the work of their artists.

Many people make more money with fotolia than ss or istock.

I understand in the US for many it is not a money earner, but over here it is the biggest site.

Valo: That is a different kind of question. I am gathering information which sites accept German-keyworded pictures. If these sites are worth it is something different. My friend must sort this second question by his own. From my point of view Fotolia is a good earner. Not as good as Shutterstock but a decent one. Although their approach to contributors could be much better, they are still much much more acceptable for me than Istock and their ways to rip-off contributors.

Yes and no, I can see how some people are seeing it differently. I don't know what makes something an International language?

1.39% of the world speaks German. It's #11 on the list (behind Punjabi)  :) French is #18!

OK folks, have fun, I'm out of this one.

Many People? Do those "many people" have the same files and number of files on SS or IS as FT?

Where's Stockmarketer I think FT is his #1 site. He'd be able to say how many files it would take on SS or IS, to equal FT? Which is the question. Same files, same number of files? And do they make more on FT?

Or maybe you can point to some "artists who make $10,000 a month on FT". That seems to be the question here lately. How many files to make $10,000 a month on site (name here) ???
