Title: Terr'ists with tripods.
Post by: Bateleur on June 04, 2008, 15:59
For a long time I worked in a developing country in Africa.

You didn't go out in public with a camera. If you did you were in danger of getting arrested as a spy.

We used to make fun of the police (in private) for their paranoia. "Of course," we'd say, "back in the home country things are different. Our good old British bobbies realise that no self-respecting spy is going to draw attention to himself by brandishing a camera."

Well ... we were wrong ...

In January of this year well-known travel photographer, Jane Sweeney, was stopped, searched and questioned by the police in London for using a tripod in the vicinity of the London Eye.

Then this article was been published in today's UK Guardian newspaper.

Looks like PC Plod is the same the world over.

I already am paranoid about even lifting my camera to my eye in public places where there are children around. Now tourist attractions are taboo too. Looks like I'll have to practice my tabletop photography.

All the time cctv footage is photographing us all the time in this country. I'm really beginning to think Mr Orwell got it right, he was just a few years out with the date.

I'd say the time for revolution is near, but no doubt these forums are being watched, and I'd be arrested for "incitement to riot".

There's always two sides to a story, but then that wouldn't make sensational press headlines would it!

And the other side is?
