what are your thoughts?
i can sort of understand the one of billy the kid for historical value, but the rest... if i owned one it would be up for auction in a heartbeat.

It just tells you who has the best PR operation and the best links with the art establishment. Even Steichen was a master of PR and top establishment figure. Mr William Bonney might have lived longer if he had understood the most lucrative form of daylight robbery.

So True. Some of these are just snob art. It's all about having an original "name here" hanging on the wall.
Many of the Gursky are printed on plexiglass or aluminum, large dimensions. He does advanced materials. If someone does a search, his early works are starting to fade and change.
I can understand a rare tintype or historic one of a kind photo, but the "ART" is over my understanding. I wouldn't mind selling one! :)

Interestingly, in contrast to when the top selling one was discussed here, it probably would get accepted on iS nowadays.
I like some of them, but not to that sort of value. I don't 'get' Cindy Sherman's work at all, but that's probably just me.

meanwhile back at the ranch, i just sold an xxxxxxxxxxxxl RF image and got a whopping buck or two...
and yeah, billy gets my vote.

I know the art world having played that game for 40 years. I will tell you for living artists its not about Quality but Value . . . and Value is created artificially through contacts, associations and the like.
If anyone of us here on this forum had the possibility of placing a piece of work on a wall of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (or other “prestige” institution) then that artist's work would have instant Value and the Collectors would come with their fat check books.
The problem is how to get on that wall.

as far as i've seen in the art market nobody could care less about the photo itself, they see it as a long-term investment, even cr-ap shot with Polaroids or iPhones is selling well as long as the so called "artist" is considered of any value by the market.

and neither the rest of the world, thanks god.
outside of the western countries there's little place for this so called "modern art", unfortunately they're spreading their tentacles in japan, korea, hongkong, singapore, china.
this is true also for music by the way, there are still a few places where they only play traditional music and they like to keep it that way.
