Title: Twitter Manual
Post by: WarrenPrice on January 17, 2010, 21:36
I remember several months ago that Leaf started the Twitter craze here on MSG.  I quickly became so disillusioned with Twitter that I avoided it until I was desperately seeking some info on the Phoenix SX.  Well, today I stumbled across something that could be helpful ... a Manual:

http://mashable.com/guidebook/twitter/ (http://mashable.com/guidebook/twitter/)

I am probably "Johnny come lately" on this but hope someone will find it useful ... besides me.

Now, is there anyone with such a manual for Facebook?

Thanks,

Thanks for the link, it will be helpful.

I had some questions about Facebook a while ago and just googled it. I don't have any links, but there is some info out there.

I believe twitter is mostly nonsense as well.  Most annoying are "follow fridays" where people post links to their same favorites every week, and the favorites all have to tweet "thank yous" back.  I'll have to read some of the stuff on that page.  thanks for the pointer.

maybe i am old fashioned.. no, correction, actually, i AM old-fashioned..

twitters, facebook, flickr,etc.. whatever...
it's just a place where ppl talk but don't listen. it's like most rap music or saloon/bar/ talk...

they write you, ask you how are you, and when you write them, they poke poke poke.
nothing else.

quite honestly, give me the old pub conversation over a pint anyday.

you know , in the old days of our youth,  we used to call some "dudes"  twit ???
well, twitters are for twits. :D

 Hi All,

I would consider learning more about social media. Hundreds of people have sent messages to me on Twitter and FB and I am always happy to answer any questions I can help with or point them in the right direction if I don't know. I have also had a great deal of questions answered for me. Most of the real conversations take place back door in Twit and FB for myself and many others.
It is not very different from this site here, except I am in touch with 500 photographers directly on Twitter. FB is my social channel with other togs and friends from my past that I lost touch with over the years, I treat the two sites very differently. Linkedin is more for business contacts at least that is what I have found. They definitely are not  the place for you if your social efforts fall short of reasonable, if you have trouble making friends it might not be the best place for you.
I have never had one person say one bad thing to me on either site. I can't say that about this site. They also have a strong support if someone is out of line or being rude. I enjoy them both and have met photographers from around the world, some big names and some not so big names. It doesn't hurt to try, you can always quit, it is mainly for people that like to share information not just take it, but that depends on the network you build. That's the best part you get to pick who you share your information with so the takers in this world will not find much use there.

Best,
Jonathan

Participating in twitter does not require "making friends".  You can follow anyone you like.  People love to have followers - it's a big ego boost.  "Takers" or "haters" or "givers", or whatever.  Thus, for example, the competition between CNN and Ashton Kutcher, and that kind of thing.  The idea that X number of people find their 140 character thoughts are of grand importance puts a smile on their faces and a bounce in their heart and a buck in their publicist's pocket. :)

I have made many new friends here and on the other social networks as well.

I didn't say you couldn't make friends.  I said you do not have to "make friends" to participate in using twitter.

 Hi Sean,

No, I believe you said " Twitter has nothing to do with making friends ". I said " I have made a lot of new friends there ". Please check both our posts for clarification., Not trying to pick on you just making a statement that is true. I have made a lot of friends there. For a lot of people it is about making new friends and connections. Personally as well as professionally.

Sean,

That was kind of you. I think that reads a lot clearer now. I agree you can keep it as professional as you like but if you have a blog of any kind ( I don't ) these sites are great to bring traffic to your site and more buyers to your work.
