Title: Upload seasonal images out of season?
Post by: Verena on March 04, 2007, 07:10
Hi everybody!

I was wondering if it matters if you upload seasonal images out of season. For example if you upload winter pictures during the summer. I assume that they won´t get downloaded right away, but will they become more popular when the season begins or do you suggest to always download right before/ during the "right" season?

I think on shutterstock people choose the search option "newest first" a lot so there it would obviously be best to upload seasonal images right before/ during the right season, but how does it work on the other big stockphoto sites?

Looking forward to your answers! :)

I don't think it matter when you upload them, pictures can sell at anytime. I sold half a dozen Christmas pictures last week.
Designers work sometimes months ahead of the season, so they could easily be looking for winter pictures in the summer.
Also, the Internet is global. When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, its summer in the south.

Pictures can sell at any time.  Remember that winter is summer in the other hemisphere, thought christmas only comes once a year.  however, designers buy in advance.

I would upload when you can with the exception of maybe SS which due to the new photo effect, i t might better to try and time it, I just dont know when that time will be.

yeah i seem to sell seasonal images all year round. I would say upload them when they are ready to be uploaded.

I think the amount that you would loose by waiting 6 months would outweigh the amount you would gain by uploading them 'in season' whenever that correct time is..... probably 1-4 months before the actual season.

I have sold a Christmas image last month.  :D

I haven't been here long enough to see trends, but although I got a lot of sales next to holidays/events (StockXpert is pretty regular in this aspect), I've read people saying it's good to start uploading images 6 months in advance.

Sold an Autumn shot yesterday.

Seems that designers think way ahead!

It is nearly autumn in the southern hemisphere.

I knew about it, but didn't realized that (about stock) before you told us. Thanks!

Same for me: out of season or not, it doesn't make a big difference. And I'm afraid if I don't upload them now, when the proper season will come (here), I will be busy with other photos and will forget to upload them.
