I don't think so. We don't get the day off. Either you go before work, durning lunch, or after work. It took me 2 minutes to vote today.

I believe the explanation would be the long time spent on the queues (in some places at least, we read of hours in queue).

You have a very complicate way of voting in the USA.  With electronic vote here in Brazil not only we vote very fast, but the result is known within hours from closing.

it seems to be a normal day for me as well.

electronic voting sounds good but I am not sure how reliable  it could be (no offense intended) but I think the main reason they keep all the paper work is  that (to my point of view) it'd be easy to manipulate the results with such systems also what if something goes wrong I mean what if the electronic system collapses somehow or work incorrectly?(why does it remind of StockXpert :)))
I know  conventional voting  systems has their s own problems too. we all remember the controversy in the US elections ,when  Bush was elected.
PS.I am not from the US

There are also 3 different time zones in the US with a 3 hour difference between the east and west ... there are different closing times at the polls in different states - so there is a valid reluctant to announce results in the east that would serve as a disincentive to people voting in the west where polls are still open - if they feel the result is already set they will not vote ...

There are actually 4 main time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific) and then Alaska and Hawaii have their own time zones.

No offense but you're comparing apples to oranges. We have 3 times your popluation. You have 26 states, we have 50. Here each state has its own ballots and each one decides how to carry one elections (and actually each district within a state has different ballots). There is also a basic difference that states rights are an important part of government here in the US. Each state has their own laws, not like there in Brazil.

As an example of how having strong states rights has an effect on our voting: in 2006 I voted in one county in Kansas so I voted there and voted on electronic machines. Today  I live in a different county only 20 miles away an I voted on a paper ballot where you color in the circle you want an then it is scanned into a machine. In 2000 and 2004 I lived in California and I voted using absentee ballots. Yes it's a weird system to outsiders but there is a reason for it all. It prevents the corruption that is constant in latin american politics. It's actually extremely hard to rig an election in the US (dispite what you hear in the media, especially fox news) because of the electoral vote system.

On a positive note. Given Obama's huge win in Pennsylvania, the election is basically over. It's extremely unlikely that McCain can win since he lost in Pennsylvania by such a large margin.

Oh, and the USA uses 9 times zones over all our states and territories (learned that in 5th grade). Atlantic Standard Time, Eastern Standard Time, Central Standard Time, Mountain Standard Time, Pacific Standard Time, Alaskan Standard Time, Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, Samoa standard time and Chamorro Standard Time.

Not to nit pick but there are four time zones in the continental US and one for Alaska and one for Hawaii. That's six. ;D

Paper ballots are a document trail which can verify anything conspicuously out of line. Things like hundreds more people voting than there are registered. Which has already happened. It doesn't address multiple voting, dead people voting, or outright fraud. The whole issue of hanging chads was that a punch didn't completely come loose from the card, not some mysterious anomaly that created extra votes or incorrect votes, it only meant that a vote may have not been counted.

The people who said they couldn't read ballot and marked the wrong line, don't know that they did, they only came out afterwords when the rumors started that some people may have. (based on a higher percentage than expected for a third candidate) Think about it, how would you know you marked a ballot wrong? If you did, wouldn't you have corrected it?  ;) If someone can't read a ballot and mark it, maybe they are too incompetent to be voting.

In a few hours it will be over and all the bickering will go on at a reduced level for another few years, followed by more politics, lies, exposures of misdeeds, accusations and mud slinging. It's nothing but a popularity contest to woo the uninformed masses to vote for their candidate. Survey done yesterday up to 14% answered that they were still undecided. WHAT? Day before the election, we've been pelted by ads, phone calls, town hall meetings, televised debates, signs and person confrontations, and 14% haven't been able to make up their mind? Ridiculous.

Now can we get back to accusing agencies of stealing from photographers, not counting a download, risking their whole existence and livelihood, for pennies? I like a good conspiracy. Just ask yourself, would you risk your business or your job, by stealing a dollar? How long would it take for everyone here to pull their portfolios if someone proved that an agency was not crediting downloads?

Downloads today on SS and BS.

Brazil has four time zones and this is addressed in national elections (processing starts only after the last state closes voting).  Rules are indeed the same in all states, what in fact makes more sense to me than rules varying even between counties.

Our population is about 60% of the USA, not 1/3, and voting is mandatory, so perhaps the number of voters in a national election is about the same.

The electronic system has already been tested and validated by all parties, and we never experienced anything abnormal, or at least more abnormal than in the times we used paper.  Aparts from a few votes here and there, no results were ever questioned with the electronic system, even after surprising results.  We can't say the same about your elections in 2004, can we?

I'm not sure it's the same in the USA, but here we have to go to specific voting sections, according to our electoral ID (a separate document from personal ID). I could get my mother's electoral ID and vote in her place if people working there don't check the signature (or age!). Nevertheless, it would be just one vote.  Each of these sections have a machine, working off-line, there are seals and stuff just like in the old sacks holding paper ballots.  The number of votes in the final count must match with the number of people who voted (the person's electoral ID is typed before the machine can receive the ballot, and until he finishes nobody can use that machine).

Adelaide

Yes of course you are correct - I was thinking broadly really .... east versus west .... the big electoral college states - Florida, Ohio, NY, California, Texas ... etc .... but my bad ... ;D

US Population: 301,139,947
Brazil Population: about 180,000,000

I'd like to point out that I also have a background in computer science an can tell you that no electronic voting machine that is currently on the market worldwide is secure from easy manipulation. I do like the personal electoral ID that most countries in the world have, but it's an impossibility given the current makeup of the US supreme court and the general "states rights" principles in the US.

I'm hoping that with Obama as president we can become a country that has universal health care, universal IDs, and a generally stronger federal government while restoring the rights of the people that have been abridged by the Bush administration.

My downloads were about normal for Tuesday.  I waited 2.5 hours on Saturday to vote so I could work on Tuesday.

I agree ... we do have a complicated system of voting.  I voted early ... last Friday.  Then there are mail-in ballots.  The soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan get to vote too.  Then, all the tabulations must go to the electoral college.  Actually, our states select the president rather than the people.  But ... it is based on the peoples' vote.

Anyway, everyday is slow for me.  I need a portfolio.   :-[  :)
