Title: Vecteezy - Anyone experience with them?
Post by: Pacesetter on October 13, 2021, 12:02
I been contacted three times this past week by a rep from Vecteezy telling me they love my work and portfolio (blush) and to apply with them to become a contributor. I don't have any vectors but have photos and videos which I see they sell on the site.

Anyone a contributor on Vecteezy and can share your experience? Thanks.

"we use the pay-per-download model, where you earn $5.00 per 1,000 downloads for vectors and photos, and $10.00 per 1,000 downloads for video"

"we use the pay-per-download model, where you earn $5.00 per 1,000 downloads for vectors and photos, and $10.00 per 1,000 downloads for video"

So $0,005 per photo and $0,010 per video.
Is anyone seriously using this service? Like, really? Anyone? Hello? I mean, come on - People are going nuts over some $0,10 commissions on SS, but are willing to get as little as 0,005 for photos - for every photo and every kind of licence, apparently?
1000 photo downloads earn me about an average  of $700-800 on Shutterstock, but people are willing to give away the same amount of photos for $5?

They also have Pay Per Download (PPD) Pro Earnings too which are calculated based on the Subscriber Share model.

Calculating the Percentage Earned from a Customer’s Subscriber Share

Customer Z downloads 10 images in 1 month, from 4 different contributors.

    1 image is from Contributor A, earning 10% of Customer Z's Subscriber Share (1 image / 10 total downloads = 10%)
    4 images are from Contributor B, earning 40% of Customer Z's Subscriber Share (4 images / 10 total downloads = 40%)
    2 images are from Contributor C, earning 20% of Customer Z's Subscriber Share (2 images / 10 total downloads = 20%)
    3 images are from Contributor D, earning 30% of Customer Z's Subscriber Share (3 images / 10 total downloads = 10%)

I can see how this works but overall I'm not impressed so will give it a miss.

Thanks all.

a wise decision!

that's an extremely (purposely?) misleading example - no one contributor is going to get that high a % - at best, a few DL on THOUSANDS of shares

I have had 5 emails in the past few weeks from 2 different people at Vecteezy, I looked at their payment structures and will give it a miss.
My photos from shutterstock appear on there when I did a search so they are affiliated with them and Shutterstock pay bad enough except that I do sell enough on there to get monthly payments.

Just published an interview with Shawn Rubel, Founder & CEO at Vecteezy:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2022/03/29/interview-with-shawn-rubel-founder-ceo-at-vecteezy/

Disclaimer: As someone who has been consistently critical of the free-download model this interview is an opportunity to try to better-understand the benefits, if any, of such models from someone on the inside the industry. Therefore, my intention is neither to promote or “dis-promote” Vecteezy.

Do a search on this forum. A few threads like this:

Here's a copy paste of my last post when they came up as I don't want to type it out again:

Why would you devalue your work by selling somewhere like Vecteezy? As someone who has been approached repeatedly by them, and even offered cash incentives to upload I don’t understand why anyone who values their work would take the bait.

They are as bad, if not worse, than Freepik was at their worst point. Giving away loads of work for free for $5 per 1000 dls or sell your work to subscribers paying $9 per month for UNLIMITED downloads. It’s madness. I can’t really imagine a worse deal.

Also full of stolen stuff like this:

https://www.vecteezy.com/members/freevector (https://www.vecteezy.com/members/freevector)

The owners are running a stock image site without even understanding how licensing works. They think they are covered as long as they sell this stuff as “editorial”, even though the uploader clearly doesn’t have copyright of the images.

There couldn’t be a worse deal/ site out there so very curious as to how they get anyone legit to sign up.

In that case the response from the person who uploaded was basically *o sh*t wish I'd read the terms as they have my work trapped for a year"

We should NOT be giving them oxygen and certainly not helping promote them with interviews.

I try test this site last year. I have around 100 file video and photos here. My total from July 2021  to today March 29, 2022  is around $16.00 plus minus cents. What I do not like ? Very low return, no control once you upload, be careful and select Pro  other ways your file will be in FREE section. Yes you will make some money- not for coffee, maybe for sugar :( . You can ask for change, but you can not change only one file but all or you mast manually post link for every one you want change. Or ask for delete but ....you must wait ONE year.I think one from worst agency on the market at these day. I will wait, but I think is wasting time.

OK I read the article, lets call that a fair trial and hang him?  ;D

Another well done interview Alex. I enjoy reading them. It's nice to see you can get these people to take the time to talk to you about their plans and the future, in their opinion.

I'm not a fan of free. Sorry. Shawn makes some good points, but in the end, maybe some free to attract buyers, does work for some people. I don't think I'm in the high quality, unique, useful, current images class. So free for me, is just free, without any future. Interesting about Google Indexing. Not the time, but the fact that anything actually gets indexed from Vecteezy above the larger agencies?

I didn't know they took photos or Editorial. Might be worth a look. But there's one large big question, before anyone can start to think about, whether this is worth a try or not. "The revenue from Pro subscribers is split 50/50 (after credit card fees) between Vecteezy and contributors." A few ways to see this. 50% of nothing is still nothing and a waste of time. 50% of 20 cents is SS territory, and there's little interest in that model.

50% of what kind of numbers? That's my question? Does anyone have personal experience?

One word search and without getting complicated. How the heck does Vecteezy have things like this for free and then talk about legal concerns?  https://www.vecteezy.com/free-vector/disney (https://www.vecteezy.com/free-vector/disney)

Who is https://www.vecteezy.com/members/freevector (https://www.vecteezy.com/members/freevector) with 100% copyrighted and trademarked images, all for free? Oh yeah, that's clearly skirting the actual legal issues. They are marked Editorial Only. Sure and downloaded for free. As if this will help the problem and stop people from misusing protected images, because they have a Editorial word on the page. So the person downloading the image can use it free on their free blog, Facebook, Twitter and emails? That's not commercial? What happened to Disney and their legal rights?

50% of what?  (https://i.postimg.cc/gkcKQhtK/scratch.gif)

Nice of Shawn to explain his views for us and some of the details of Vecteezy. My compliments also for not using a jumble of corporate acronyms, exciting cliches and double talk.

Subscriber share IF someone pays $14 for ten downloads...  https://www.vecteezy.com/deals/how-are-ppd-pro-earnings-calculated (https://www.vecteezy.com/deals/how-are-ppd-pro-earnings-calculated)

65c a DL. How much do people actually pay for a subscription? Or do I understand it's $14 for an unlimited plan and we need to hope they only download 10 images or 1, not 100? Because if they download 100 we'd get 6.5c an image.

And the annual plan, $9 a month, I'd get even less?

Even if some claims sound outright ridiculous without any reliable stats to prove (giving away free pics will lead to more sales of paid pics), it's worth listening to what the top guys in these agencies are thinking so we can adapt accordingly. Like it or not, the free-download model is only going to grow and we need to be aware instead of burying our heads in the sand hoping it will die off.

Vecteezy do have a "pro" section for paid-downloads which I'll give a go. At this stage, as my earnings have decreased so much I have almost nothing to lose.

I guess they (most of the agencies) have us (most of the contributors) where they want us to be.

You have to be crazy to contribute to that site. This might be one of the worst sites with digital assets I have seen so far. Without any doubt. The ones like canstock, bigstock bla bla bla are jewels besides this one, if that is even possible. :o

Your earning decreased because of these free and some illegal websites, and now you too starting the same journey.
Wait some more time and you will then pay to gain downloads. Just like etsy shop promotion.

From the interview and elsewhere I think they literally don't know anything about Trademarks or Copyright, but somehow feel entitled to run a stock image library anyway?

They seem to think that the issue is only that the images contain Trademarks, so its fine to license them as long as Editorial. They ignore the fact they the uploaders also clearly don’t have the copyright to the specific images. Like I could trawl the New York Times website and sell licenses for all the news images or cartoon strips as Editorial to other papers even though I am not the photographer or illustrator.

Another highlight from the interview:
“I anticipate the continued demand for free content to remain strong”

No s**t. It’s business smarts like that got him where he is today I guess.

I'd only consider the pro plan. Here's another version. I think most of us can see how many people are subscribers on other sites and do not buy single images. Plus I know from mine how the 750 and 350 packs produce different numbers, which says, most of my downloads on SS come from subscriptions. BIG subscriptions.

Some more numbers based on the real situation and not someone paying $14 for ten images.

Annual Pack:

$9 revenue - $0.85 for credit card fees and refunds = $8.15
$8.15 x 50% revenue split = $4.075 Subscriber Share
100 DLS in a month
Subscriber Share is $0.04075 per image

Since these packs are unlimited, what's to stop someone from paying for a year, and downloading thousands of images and then going away?

That's why I'd like to hear from someone who is actually working Vecteezy and what is their usual monthly RPD? What are the real numbers that anyone might see?

Brasilnut, if you give this crappy agency a go, you are promoting them.

Think again. As a book cover artist and creator, do you really want to be associated with this crap?

Also, many new stock contributors seek advice from you. Promoting a "free" crappy agency is not a responsible thing to do.

Here is my experience with them:

I only signed up in mid February and uploaded 1000 photos, all as "pro", not in the free section. Sales started pretty much immediately. For the last 2 weeks of Feb. I made $2,54, for March $15,30.

Not much, but that´s more than I make with larger portfolios on Bigstock, Canstock and the like. I think it´s a promising start.

If you want to try it out yourself, it would be nice if you use my referral link: https://www.vecteezy.com/contributors?ref=cd615833-b630-4c15-a417-6018c266c5c3&sub_id=default (https://www.vecteezy.com/contributors?ref=cd615833-b630-4c15-a417-6018c266c5c3&sub_id=default)

Another thing to bear in mind is that you are counting yourself out of posssible image buyouts by uploading to these kinds of sites. They hold onto your work for a year. My biggest sales have been 4 figure sums from 123RF and Shutterstock for image buyouts. Is it worth the risk of missing out on one these?
