Dear Forum Members!

There is a sale proposition of a portfolio of vector images (about 38,000). Portfolio has been already placed to all major microstock sites and generate about $150,000 annual revenue. Sale will be conducted in the form of an Auction in the middle of December 2020. The sale implies complete copyright transfer for all images incl. source files and accounts transfer on all microstock sites. To get more information write us at newbielink:mailto:[email protected] [nonactive]

I'm not a spambot or something. But please use email, we will not provide more details here.

Thank you.

Forgive us for not believing you.

If these vectors are generating so much revenue, why are they for sale?

I can understand it if there are diminshing returns. But not sure why you wouldn't provide details here if it is legit.
I think Morphart buys portfolios so might be worth sending him a PM in any case

I'll save you the trouble of the whole auction thing and just buy it from you for $1

The odds are that this is a complete scam - that even if this portfolio exists, the person offering it for sale isn't actually the creator of the work or current copyright holder.

And as mentioned above, if the work is done and it is making a good income, why on earth would anyone sell?

The person posting just joined here (Nov 21; this is their 2nd post) to promote this wonderful deal :). No real name, no country, no business address...

I sent email to the given address (from a spare email account I keep for things like this) and it didn't bounce.

It did get me thinking though: If a transaction of this sort was to happen, how could you safely negotiate this? With photographs, if the purported seller could offer a selection of RAW files for the images they claimed to be the owner of, that'd be a good start. With vectors it's a lot harder.

Seems less and less legit, the more you read it!

Due to many questions on the sale that we receive let us clarify that the sale is conducted by a Luxembourg registered securitisation company. Based on mandate from its investors the company has purchased portfolio of assets and now it is putting it on sale. For obvious reasons we cannot disclose certain information publicly. All details are discussed in personal correspondence after signing the NDA. The address is listed above.

I can understand why all details might not be disclosed here, but you didnt even address the problem of the site address you posted not even being a viable site.

Or that the site was only registered 11 days ago?  ???

Has anyone here ever bought a portfolio and if so how did it work out.

Many years ago, 2011, I just looked, someone on SS was selling his illustration portfolio. Nice guy in Indonesia, made some pretty good claims, how much he was making a year from them, but it was too expensive. He was asking $5,000 which was more than it made in three years. I agreed to buy 50 images on spec, I gave him some subjects I wanted and paid $3 each (if I recall right?) figuring the RPI and RPD at the time, I'd have my money back in no time. Oh and one of the conditions was 50 accepted images.

Reminder, the market was starting to get soft in 2011/2012 on SS. It wasn't the upload on Monday, sell by Wednesday as before.

Over time I used a couple to make some variations, and these are rasters, not vectors. I did some conversions into vectors recently for Adobe.

Ready? My $150 investment, since 2011 on SS = $38.49 from 74 downloads.   :-[  99 on Adobe. So much for my brilliant investment. Ten years and I'm going to recover the money in another 20? In other words, never.

Back to the person with the auction here. Past performance will not indicate future sales and income, times have changed. Hopefully if they are working for an estate or someone getting out of the business or whatever and legitimate, one of the agencies should be the likely buyer, not one of us. Agencies can invest and look forward to 100% of the returns, for themselves, as there's no commission. Agencies have the financial depth to buy something like this. I'd say that the majority of people on the forum, can't afford what this will be sold for, if it's legitimate.

Nice would be to be able to see what's up for auction. Who would ever buy something, that they can't see. There's no reason for being "secret" as more people, more interest would drive the price up. Just wrong and highly suspicious in so many ways.

So I received a reply to me email (sent yesterday) with a copy of the Non Disclosure Agreement they want signed attached.

Even though they, the auctioneers & the company putting together the auction, are registered at the same address in Brussels, they want England, and or the UK, to be where any NDA disputes are resolved?

"This Agreement shall remain in effect for a three-year term.  The validity, construction and performance of this Agreement shall be governed and construed in accordance with Common Law governing the UK of applicable to contracts made and to be wholly performed within such state, without giving effect to any conflict of laws provisions thereof.  The courts located in England shall have sole and exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes arising under the terms of this Agreement. "

Even if you leave aside all the issues about confirming that they really do own what they're selling, and all the issues about whether this work did in the past earn what they claim, and what the impact of royalty cuts at Shutterstock have had/will have on it, I can't see any good reason why all this secrecy about the sale?

People who license the work don't care who owns the vectors - i.e. it won't hurt current sales or cause the agencies to take any action. Agencies don't care. Other contributors can't benefit from knowing a portfolio is for sale

Too much shady stuff for my tasts.

Just a thought, maybe the designer has passed away. Probably better to sell off a portfolio - rather than have someone manage it posthumously.

Agreed, past earnings can't be an indicator for final price but, as an 'auction', could end up being a fairly substantial inheritance.

Your scenario is as good as any I can imagine.

Soooooo many questions, soooooo little interest.

Speculation on the OP, yes, but it does beg the question - what are we leaving behind and how can our families make the most of it when we're gone? I could see a portfolio sale tidying assets up quite nicely, when the time comes.

He mentioned the portfolio earned $150k/year. He might be selling it for $1million. Hence, the sale.

Advice to a Microstock author buying content: "Three years earnings is too much!"
Advice to a Microstock author selling content: "Doesn't matter if you only make 35 cents a download, and get ten sales a year... don't sell them for any less than $10,000 per item!"

Not quoting you... just the general vibe here when it comes to selling the rights!  :D

Plus Agencies can confirm the revenue and already have the source files.

Most probably they are some kind of a legal/accountant agency of sorts trying to unload an asset of someone who has died or wants to liquidate.
What I'm trying to say is that they don't know sh*t about how the industry works and use this legal/financial lingo, tactics and approaches.

Well... Good luck with that...
