Post by: fotoroad on June 13, 2025, 07:24
I buy this Viltrox 20 mm lens for vlogging with my Sony camera and I am surprise is really good for the money. I believe it was coming also for other brands https://youtu.be/eq-JKPHkIRg?si=QosNG8dz4KTXRi9X (https://youtu.be/eq-JKPHkIRg?si=QosNG8dz4KTXRi9X) So far I love it. This is an amateur lens. For $180 you could find a better used lens.
Here are the downsides of your lens:
1. Optical drawbacks
Barrel and wave-like distortion — requires manual correction; lens profile may not be built into some cameras or editors.

Strong vignetting at f/2.8 (~3 EV) — only significantly reduced at f/5.6 and smaller apertures.

Softness at edges and corners — even at f/4–f/5.6; needs to be stopped down to f/8–f/11 for consistent sharpness across the frame.

Coma in low light or night scenes — light sources (like stars) may appear stretched or distorted.

Flare and contrast loss when shooting against strong light — coating is not very effective, which can reduce image clarity.

2. Mechanical and design drawbacks
Plastic body, with metal mount only — durability is not on par with premium lenses.

No weather sealing — not safe for shooting in rain or dusty conditions.

Very basic design — only a focus ring (by-wire), no AF/MF switch or custom controls.

3. Autofocus and compatibility
Slow autofocus on older Sony cameras (e.g. a7III or earlier) — can hunt and occasionally miss focus.

Audible focusing motor — STM motor noise can be picked up during video recording in quiet environments.

I talk about that part and I do not like it but not major problem, I am not planing shooting in rain and I do not have jungle forest on my list also :) I do not need $800 lens, for vlogging is to good and for some wide angle photo and video is great. Price is very fair. For stock, zero problem. Some first image are already accepted and footage also
