Title: What's happening with Yuri Acrus?
Post by: charged on September 04, 2019, 13:59
Just wondering if anyone knows what is happening with Yuri Acrus's business? For the longest time he was THE mega selling photographer. He shoots great stuff. He had a huge staff. I can only imagine his earnings has collapsed like everyone else's. In the era of low prices, I can only imagine his high production costs no longer works. I know some of you are not a fan of him. Let's not say negative things about him. Thanks!

Not much activity since 2017 on the links I know. https://www.facebook.com/yuriarcurs/ (https://www.facebook.com/yuriarcurs/) or http://arcurs.com/ (http://arcurs.com/)  I think he moved to Cape Town, S Africa back then and started new businesses there.

Slightly unusual marketing.
1 "...We know we've got the best prices, highest sign-up bonuses and the greatest bulk discounts, but of course we'd say that. So as a guarantee, if you find our images cheaper anywhere else, we will immediately match the price."

3 "... Our images are of the highest quality and exclusive to us and GettyImages only, so you wont find them anywhere else!"

(Is it really the "only site in the world with Just Exclusives"?)

They used to boast a team of expert retouchers who could make many changes to their files to your specifications. I couldn't see a link to that on the current front page or on a random file page I clicked on.

Twitter feed nothing since March when he announced a price reduction  for images on his own site:

He made a ton of money and moved to a place with low taxes and a low cost of living.  I imagine he's sitting on a beach enjoying the fruits of his hard work.  Or starting another business with a greater upside than microstock.

I am guessing he has gone bankrupt.... Maybe he reads these post and can tell us how famous and rich he is....

PLEASE, let us not speak ill of him. I didn't bring his name up for that purpose. I was just curious about how his business was doing with its high production costs, given the collapse of pricing.

I believe he is doing very well. And so he should. He put in a ton of effort and commitment and should enjoy the fruits of his labor!

As in everything, we have to isolate useful from biased or wrong opinions.
I didn't have the luck to be around when he was, i just read the archives when i sign up here.

Here is an isolated opinion of his although many other parts of the article (a closer look at AS) is probably under question or just subjective.

Quote
[...] My own customers on peopleimages.com are often complaining that shutterstock.com and fotolia.com looks outdated and refer to the images as looking “old”, “bad”, “too similar” and too heavily populated by cartoons and vectors. [....]

While analysing Adobe’s entry into stock it’s worth mentioning that Shutterstock offers the exact same images as Adobe Stock (and I mean identical). They offer the exact same type of subscriptions and single image download models. Shutterstock is finding themselves face to face with Adobe like no other stock agency out there. They even acquire customers the same way, using millions on Adwords and SEO, except now Shutterstock has a bigger brother, with deeper pockets. I see Shutterstock as potentially the biggest loser from the entry of Adobe Stock and it seems to show already since their stocks have dropped so low that if they go just a tiny bit lower, Jon Oringer will no longer be a member of the billionaires club… ouch.

Guess he got this right.

He has a very successful photo business with, interns, students and apprentices. He gets big contract jobs because he has the staff, crew, make-up, studio, location scouts and everything needed.

He's an IS exclusive but I doubt that Yuri gives a hoot about Microstock.

Very smart, he played it right, got know, recognized, and moved up.

There's no reason for Yuri to be blogging or posting on these Microstock forums.

Not sure how that citizen journalist site of his ever went.

Best wishes and here's to his continued success.

he is through. do you have any idea of what means commercial photographer outside microstok? i have you no...u yuri probably had a bunch of gig in his career nothing big i think. big contract are made mostly by represented photographer who don't have even a clue what micro stock is...do you think tat big fashion photographer or commercial american giant have ever shot for micro? unfortunately when you shoot for micro you become a bit banned by the rest of the world, is more common that a commercial photog go to micro when is fame coma fading, but starting from micro believe me is like a big no when you wanna shoot or move to commercial big gig. if you thinktwice actually micro is killing part of those gig who made agent , agency and commercial studio so profitable..he was great to understand the potential earlier than other, made lot of money but he has cost out of this world, i would be interested to see how much he earn compared to monkey business or some big eastern world production house who have ten time less costs.
his style for me is obsolete in this monet, for example i  find much more creative jacob lund, who worked for him at beginning if i am not wrong, or uteri images...he is style look like 2000 or 90...too perfect model too shiny photoshooting while the trend is clearly towards spontaneity and casual shooting....i'm sure he's still doing lot of money but millions no.

I'm not sure he is though......up until 2017 he was a great self publicist I've seen nothing since then. Maybe he's decided its not needed any more but I always felt he needed to keep he's ego stoked. Don't get me wrong he's a great businessman who spotted and exploited an opportunity to the max. I admire him greatly for that.

I meet Yuri a couple of times at a conference in NYC. Yes he did have a big ego...Biggest I ever meet and I have been around some world class big heads. He told me at the time, maybe eight, nine years ago. He average 40 bucks per loaded image cost. He said he tried to load at least 100 images per session.  I thought at the time that would not be a very good ROI on future earnings. Maybe that's  why no one has heard much about him. Even if 40 bucks was a stretch I am not sure you would ever make a profit , just long term losses.

Probably, none of us are his confidantes, and even if we were, we'd be keeping his business confidential, by definition.
It may be that we can infer something from the post announcing he was reducing all prices on his own site, and that apparently (?) the retouching side of his business has either ceased or certainly isn't being heavily plugged nowadays.

Yuri is a smart guy, and I'm sure he's putting his business efforts and energies wherever they are most worthwhile.  I don't know him personally.  This Microstock model got saturated fast, in a period within 8-10 years... and at this point in my book this wave has crashed.  I resubmitted like 40 previous rejects to Shutterstock the middle of last month.  36 got approved.  In the last month I've earned .38 cents off them.  WOOOAH try not to get overly excited, now.  Why on earth would I waste my time trying to re-ignite microstock sales!?  This model has gone to crap, and I have no idea how or why most pro photographers are still submitting.

I've moved on to other eCommerce pursuits now, but if I had to do it all over again I would have hired photographers to shoot for me, cull, edit, and upload back in the 2006-2010 era.  Letting go of the control that I couldn't let go of, and investing into the business a bit more by adding freelance employees.  I'd now be retired at age 36, and living simply off my hard work.  Hindsight vision is 20/20, yada yada - I still feel blessed for the journey and the income opportunity over the past 13 years.  Everything I've learned will transfer over to many other areas of my life.  My biggest struggle has always been time-management, and still remains to be... (oh wait, I'm on an internet forum again...?? oops)

Last time I have head from him his was talking:

- mobile photo stock site he created
Both projets should change stock photography business. Still waiting...

And now, not popping in, is causing a stir?  ;D

Not you:

Poor Yuri only making 5 million a year instead of 10 million a year, and people talking about him, like they are so much smarter. People who claim to be big trad photographers and big business, but they cry over Microstock sales lost, reviews, losing hundreds of dollars. Then try to run down Yuri? Of course he doesn't blog or come here to be insulted.

Pick a number, it grows every month. LOL Then the people with fine arts or photo degrees who can't stand being rejected by a stupid agency reviewer and also know how the buyers are fools for not downloading the best work out there.

Heck I upload things, usually I think they are interesting enough and might sell, yes I'm disappointed when they don't, but the idea is still to make a product that buyers want, not art.  Also the days of shooting what you see on a walk about, are so long gone, they are ancient history.

I admit sometimes I upload things that I just liked and I don't expect anyone to download them. Some are a surprise, most I'm right, no market, no interest.

Anyway I don't understand the obsession with what's Yuri doing, only to be followed by so many people who know better and are trying to put him down? He's himself, if you were like him, would you come to some forum to be ridiculed , insulted, and attacked. Or just take the millions, stop giving advice to people who won't listen.

Yuri Arcurs is rated as one of the highest earning photographers in the world, it's still making him millions a year.

Who else here has endorsement deals with Hasselblad? Or any other camera  Mfg.?

But saddest of all is when you upload something you're not too keen on, and as you gradually grow to hate it more and more  it becomes one of the best sellers in your portfolio. It's a cruel world!

I guess the ones with a mindset of a typical buyer are the best microstock photographers. Same is true for the majority of event photographers, at least from where i come from, give it too much work, thought and creativity and you might even find yourself criticized by clients that were expecting a lot less.

I don't think many are obsessed but just curious. That link is several years out of date. I see no evidence one way or the other he is currently making profits of millions of year. He may have changed his philosophy but it seems odd that the master of self promotion seems to be in stealth mode  :-X

Well, I got about 150,000 sales on SS/BS so far and goodness knows how many on iStock, so I haven't done too badly down the years.

I guess no one bothered to look at Yuri's Instagram account.  He was looking for "new faces" for his portfolio.  The address listed for the casting call was in Cape Town.

Good find, now we know he is still doing stock photos. Lots of nice pics on his IG.

I think early on someone mentioned that Yuri moved for tax reasons, I don't know if that's all, but yes, Cape Town. For those who want to read and discover:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHZF60RrXrwADTs4edcMWOQ (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHZF60RrXrwADTs4edcMWOQ) his Youtube account lists Cape Town 2012 and new studio, 2011?

I don't do Instagram either I would have missed anything there.

But you are correct, this isn't news, he's been there for some time now.

I posted this link before, newer new studio, he owns the building and it's larger. 2017 - https://www.mystockphoto.org/yuri-arcurs-new-studio/ (https://www.mystockphoto.org/yuri-arcurs-new-studio/)

What the heck was his citizen journalist phone photo site anyway? I'm on the road, can't find the name, so I don't know if it's still active.

I want one of those!  >:( Heck I upload thoughtful useful and what I think can be sold images, which languish and die. True I have uploaded some, "oh heck, I'll snap that thing" which actually have moderate downloads.

And I admit, sometimes I'm bored and I make an idea into an image and upload that. I don't expect them to sell, just, I wanted to do it as a project. Has sold:

Early years I did upload something, as an aside, at an event, that had nothing to do with the whole weekend, and that sells, the subject and effort shots, not much.

But I'd sure like an off the cuff shot to be a "best seller".  8) ;D ;D

Inappropriate use of a Stock Photo?  ;D You're right, lots of tiny entry level cameras and lenses, what no cell phone?

The article was from 2017..A lot has happen in the stock business in the last two years.

Like what for example that applies to the topic of What's happening with Yuri Acrus? Keep in mind he owns a studio,  and building, runs a school, has millions of dollars, owns an agency and is an IS/Getty exclusive, 115,611 Peopleimages stock pictures, 15,164 Yuri Arcurs stock pictures and images, 3,513 yuri_arcurs stock videos, 8,495 peopleimages stock videos

Do you honestly think he's hurting or in trouble, like some have suggested?

Yes we have been knocked down, in fact since 2012, doesn't seem to be slowing down Yuri at all?

Nice building, from the outside. Good for him. Jealous.

From this link, it reads like he is doing just fine.
http://arcurs.com/2017/03/were-back/ (http://arcurs.com/2017/03/were-back/)

I was also looking at min wage in South Africa. It is something like $1.50USD per hour. Of cause models would earn much higher, I can hardly believe how cheap it can be in SA. Good for him to relocate to somewhere much cheaper. I personally wouldn't do it. I'm lucky enough to live in the first world, and that is where I'm staying.

Never been to Cape Town but I'd agree with you on what I imagine it's like. I also think climate, what's the weather like, a bit on the warm side for my taste. What's the political atmosphere?

Not sure about 3rd world, as it's a tourist destination, big city, and should have many choices for different living and financial status.

I wonder how many Danish models there are.  ;)

Oh wait, I get it now, Yuri is doing so bad that he had to move to a third world country to stay in business. LOL  ;D

Alas, poor Yuri! I knew him, Charged: a fellow
of infinite white, of most excellent photo: he hath
borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is!

Yeah it's a classic tragedy.

It was actually an Aug 30, 2019 post for a casting on Sept 2, 2019.  A little over two weeks ago.
