For people who have dealt with this before, how do you deal with editorial footage in terms of urgency of upload?

What i mean is: say you shot an event (a city marathon or christmas event, etc.). Do you put that footage as top priority to upload as close to the event as possible? or do you simply take it as every other footage you have, and just upload it when you can?

I think the question comes from considering whether or not i have something to profit (newspapers, tvs, etc.) from uploading a christmas event on the 27th December, or not (it will be bought the next year as a promotion for the next similar event?)

Just curious to know if somebody has had any thoughts or experience on that!

Thanks!

I guess if it's a generic and seasonal asset maybe they can work for other times but if it's a specific event it would be good if you upload that fast.

There is only one or two agencies that have a "hot news" channel to upload to.  For all the others, your approval speed will be the same as with any other material.

Personally I can count on one hand the number of times I have sold something editorial for an event already past.  The writers are already on to The Next Great Thing and have no interest in the past (assuming you are not talking about some major assassination or perhaps major storm damage from a named hurricane).

As such, I edit and submit in my normal cycle.  If it is a one-time event, I may not even bother.  For seasonal events (New Years Eve, Christmas parades, and the like), I submit them, knowing they have potential in future years.  I have some of those that have sold reliably every year for 5+ years.  Nothing on them for 11 months, then all sales in the month leading up to the next occurrence of the event.

Dunno about footage but for stills, yes I try to upload as soon after the event as possible and not at the micros. I'll put it at Alamy, REX Features, Zuma Press type breaking news editorial agencies. They'd be up for the world within minutes.

Some Xmas stuff, in my opinion, seem to make for good regular stock as it's a re-occurring event. I've stopped putting this type of seasonal stuff up as breaking news as sales can come in July (it has!).

thanks for the answers, i was think something about those lines, but i have no experience over time (new to this) to know how this will work in the future

i was expecting it would be something like that, after all every seasonal event is visually pretty much the same.
