Title: What a great experience! Than's Jonathan Ross!
Post by: MatHayward on October 28, 2009, 11:36
Yesterday I was privileged to get to watch Jonathan Ross and his awesome team during an all day shoot at a very cool medical facility in Seattle.  I just wanted to publicly thank Jonathan for the experience.  They were using the Red One Camera System which both excites me and intimidates . out of me at the same time.  Judging from what I saw in camera I think there was some insanely good stock coverage captured yesterday.  If you've never seen that camera being used in person it is a beast!

It seems like a  rare anomaly to me that someone as established and talented as Jonathan is so generous with his knowledge and is willing to share his experience and teach the likes of me.  In the past I have seen him share shot lists with this group, web casts with great information and tips, I've seen him speak at a couple of different events and every time I learn something new.  One thing I learned yesterday is that I have a heck of a lot to learn.  Doing a high end professional shoot is a heck of a  lot of work and they have it down to a science.  From a very organized shot list with a tight but attainable timeline, a wide variety of tools, a producer that is gifted with the ability to keep everyone on track, talented, diverse models and the ability to gain access to incredible locations it is no wonder he is as successful as he is.

Thanks again Jonathan!  You should do this stuff for a living!   :D

I've shot several films with the Red One - way back in the day when the camera hardly had any post support. It's an awesome camera. I can't wait for the DSCM full frame Scarlet to hit the market, thats gonna be my next big upgrade.

Wow, that sounds like a wonderful opportunity!  I've been spending time off and on in "a very cool medical facility in Seattle" so I'm curious if it's the same one.  One of these days I'll be at that stage for shooting models in facilities, but for now it's smaller steps for me.

I enjoy Jonathan's posts.  Also did an internet search on the Red One system.... way outta my league.  My business model is: take cheap pictures; sell cheap pictures.
:-)

I agree wholeheartedly.

I also did a google search for the Red One system, and just about fell out of my chair (and made a co-worker peek over my cubicle wall when I gasped loudly)!  That's worth more than my car.  Wow, I admire the fact you got to see it in action... It sounds extremely impressive!

I don't think I can afford one right now either.  Who am I kidding!  I can't afford a new pair of underwear right now!

The film industry has been using these cameras for major motion pictures (District 9, The Girlfriend Experience) as the resolution for video is 4 times that of HD.  Insanity I tell you!  Jonathan can correct me if he is reading this but I don't think he's selling his pics on the cheap with these types of shoots.  I don't know how much was spent on this particular shoot but it wasn't a solid 6 or 7 hours of production with around a dozen people involved including models.  This was a motion shoot but the cool thing about the Red One is that you can pull high resolution still images from the videos.  Scary and exciting all at once.  The technological revolution is afoot!

In addition to learning about the new camera technology I learned a lot about the future of medicine on this shoot.  Specifically surgical procedures.  Some of the robots used for surgery and the tools for training are even more insane that the Red One Camera technology!

I'm going back to my Atari video game system and rotary phone now.

I'll echo the thanks to Jonathan. He's been generous with his knowledge and passion and it's been a ton of fun working with him. He's been an early (and vocal) supporter and I'm grateful for that.

Thanks Jonathan!

Hi All,

Don't let Mat fool you, he helped a ton whenever I needed him he was there and ready. Thank you for the super kind words Mat as well as everyone, they mean the world. Yesterdays shoot was a high end shoot for us but there are so many ways around the costs, you would be surprised what you can build with the right team for a reasonable cost, bartering is what it's all about and everyone wins.
If this seems daunting to consider at this point in your career one thing to remember is that my wife and I started off shooting RF Macro 11 years ago just the two of us on the super cheap ( like free ) this just all developed over time. it is not so hard as it seems now looking back, and with the technology that is going to be at the fingertips of this new generation the work we think is out there and on the edge now will seem passe in no time. The fun part for me is it always allows you to learn something new, this buisness never sleeps :D

Best to all,
Jonathan

Hi AP,

Thanks AP. Well, the info on how much we are going to make with our motion is based off several people I know that have shared their info and numbers with me after they have been in motion for quite some time so that took a bit of the risk out but there is always a bit of risk when you try a new direction. Right now motion is the fastest growing stock medium out there. That doesn't always mean a great deal if you don't have numbers to share but as soon as we start to see some kind of regular numbers I will be sure to post them. Stock can be big money, although at this time it is much harder than ever before. keep the faith ;)

Best,
Jonathan
