Title: What a nice gesture!!
Post by: Lagereek on August 20, 2012, 11:02
About a year back, a British photographer asked me about the Getty-RM, I informed him about the house-collection, etc, how difficult it was to get in and all that. Anyway cut a long story short, he showed me his portfolio and it was BRILLANT!, in every way.
I thought to myself, no way this guys book is just going to get tossed away. I phoned up an Art-director at Getty, known him for years and told him about this photographer, sure enough, he looked at his portfolio and ofcourse he gave him a very fine contract indeed.

Now a year later,  he invites me down to Cornwall in England, one of my favourite spots, everything paid even the airticket. He also told me that within the first year only, he earned more the a 5 figured amount, and with just 300 pictures.

how about that,  how nice. :)

i got my RM portfolio, but find no response from getty.. somehow what i feel they want some studio shoot for concepts or ideas that take time to compose in digital way.

Oh how awesome it would be to see the portfolios of newly accepted Getty RM shooters.

I wonder what subjects they covered. One of those mysteries I guess.

And then people wonder why some of us don't post their ports here...

What a nice story!  Great of him/her to recognise your part in their success.

Lovely experience!  Very nice that your friend remembers the part you played in his success.  Hope you enjoyed Cornwall!  :)

When living in London, 23 years, I had a summer place down in Cornwall, not far from Polppero. Typical pirate country, where Enid Blyton set her famous Five books. Beautyful.

Peter Beavis?

No, not him. its of no importance anyway. The interesting thing here is that, great photography is still appreciated and rewarded. Thats the main issue.

The Famous Five books were my most, absolute favorite books as a child!  Most Americans had never heard of her or the series.  I totally wanted to be George!

Yes that is how it was in the 'good old days".It wasn't your photos- it was who you knew or how good you where at talking some  body in to giving you a fat commission or paying your way to some far off place to take photos. If you weren't part of the "Pro-Club"- you where beatring you head against and unclimbable wall. Well the micro have proved there was some great shooter out there beside the "So called Pros". It has torn down the wall. but to be successful in the new market you still have to take photos that the customer wants or needs. I work in all markets that need aerial photos,be it micro, trad or commission. In the end that is what is inportent-what ever works for you and makes you the most money or makes you happy.
