What do you need to produce good stock? :-) Just curious.... ::)
-
You need a 'none of the above' choice
-
Pencil, paper, scanner, Adobe Illustrator and a computer. I guess that would be the bare minimum.

You are missing "imagination"

You are missing "imagination"
I tried to upload pure imagination once, but SS rejected it for "missing focus" :D .... you still need tools to incarnate "imagination".

I guess I need hands too. I forgot those.

None of the above.
What you need is imagination, research abilities and a nice looking girlfriend.
You can even do it with a dog, if you dont have a girlfriend, or a butterfly.

People who voted non of the above, what do they think is needed in terms of equipment? I dont see much choices left.

There's a lot more to producing good content than just the equipment. Any of those options above can produce crap or dynamite work, but it is the creativity, knowledge, skill, management, resources, contacts, assistants, breadth of talent, etc. that go into the output (results). The cameras are only a tool of many.

I think the gist of the question is about the camera used, no?

Exactly...

Every agency has its minimum requirements. If your camera can do that, technically its good enough. But like everything else, its your eye and imagination that counts.
The question is kinda similar to "what kind of hammer will build the best house". :)

Then you should have specifically said hardware.

Never mentioned lights. Very amateurish.

To all the folks who can create images magically just with their minds or are missing their favourite strobe brand in the poll: i thought it was quite obvious that the poll focusses mostly on the camera type (with one exception which includes further equippment). my apologies if thar was not clear enough. if you have further concerns i suggest you just leave a constructive comment since i am seriously interested in the opinion of you guys...

I thought my comment was pretty constructive, but even that isn't satisfactory to you. Carry on.....

of course you need a camera, or something that can get pixels into the frame.
The better camera the easier. But it is not about the camera, it is about the vision the artist has.
You can in fact just scan a picture of your last train ticket or what your girlfriend wrote this morning.
it is not about equipment but about knowing the market and in some way be able to come up with a digital file that the crowd will love..
Cameras are easy though, they provide you with many million pixels and if you point in the right direction, you will get an advantage over those who paint everything with paintbrushes.

I think the OP is well aware it takes more than a camera, he just happened to be interested in the camera part and created a poll for just that. Lets not make it more complicate then it is.

Well then, he could have and still can clarify that in the thread title. Simple. Why guess?

Fair enough

You don't need a top end camera. Almost all the newer entry level DSLR cameras can do 10 times more than the "professional" digital cameras that came out in 2008. You definitely don't need strobes. It's nice to have them, but many buyers prefer more naturalistic, authentic lighting nowadays. If I can get an image without strobes or flash, then I will go that direction first. I prefer results from window light or a reflector.
The best investment is on good lenses because of image sharpness requirements. If you can't afford top dollar zooms, then good fixed lenses will get the job done for less money.
If were going to put together a beginner startup kit, it would be something like a Nikon D3300, 35 1.8 or 50 1.8 lens, used Tamron 90 mm macro, SB700 flash with modifier, a 5 in 1 reflector and a Vanguard tripod.
That's just an example. You do something similar with a Fuji, Sony or Canon kit.

i love my virtual studio.
i can choose the light setup or lens with a click of the mouse, tweak the reflections, don't worry about the iso...and hit the render button :)
Ok, just kidding, it's not so easy to make a good 3D image :D

can you upload pictures with your eyes? don't you have to photograph it somehow?
