What do you pay kids who model for you?  The same rate as an adult model or a reduced rate?

In the past I've mostly only hired a family as an entire unit and paid a 'family rate' for everyone .. it makes it tougher to know what to pay if I just need the kid from a family.

Kid's don't have the same attention span as adults so it would be hard for them to work as hard or be as 'useful' on a shoot but still, they need to be pair a fair amount....

thoughts?

My kids would do just about anything for some candy...

I should probably talk to them about that.  :o

Deep philosophical issues here. Should the worker be paid the least he will accept or the rate that reflects the value of his labour to the hirer?
Are pics of kids worth more or less than pics of adults?
And other stuff, too.

Depends on whether they are family, friends or hired models I guess;

Family - share of income from sold images each month?
Friends - some free prints?
Hired models - going rate for hired models? TFP?

I tend to pay kids $25 flat rate for about an hour.  If it's more like 2 hours, maybe $40.

Under no circumstances are you to mention that to my kids!

Well, _my_ kid doesn't get that.  She gets room and board!

I give my girls a flat rate of $20 for the whole year to model for me, in addition to some kind of food payment per shoot, with "food" being of the "junk/happymeal" variety.  So far they don't complain and they like modelling for me.

If it's someone else's kid I just give them copies of the pics in exchange for the MR. I don't often use other people's kids though.

I had to respond to a few models while I was waiting for answers and it looks like I picked a pretty 'on par' amount.  I like to give models a higher amount if I've used them before because I then know they are good and worthwhile to shoot. Or, in other words, there is less risk involved.   I decided to pay $20/hr for first time kid models and $30/hr for models I've used before.  My adult rate is $30 for new models $50/hr for models I've used.

When you take photos to kids, is some parent/adult present?
If yes you should consider the time this parent/adult will spend, even if it is only waiting.

I think that you have to consider that a kid generally don't move alone, often he needs to be accompanied by some adult, and the time spent by the adult should be considered too.

Personally I will pay the same for adult and kid, even if according to my reasoning I should pay more for the kid, as I disturb at least 2 persons.  :-\

Adults are usually thrilled to have their kids in pictures, so they don't really care.
