How do you keyword your images?
I have been using Imatch and it makes the process quite a bit easier, however I am interested in hearing what other people use.
For those people who don't use a program to keyword their images, or don't keyword before uploaded I would strongly sudjest that you do. It saves lots of time as most stock sites will then, automatically extract the keywords from your image, so you don't have to type them in when you are uploading.
This first post is 5 years old now :) but since this discussion is still current, I'll update it with my current workflow.
For keywording research I use: http://microstockgroup.com/tools/keyword.php (http://microstockgroup.com/tools/keyword.php)
Then I simply put the keywords in the IPTC info inside photoshop or Adobe Bridge: File > File Info or Ctrl+Alt+crap+I
-
I save the keywords, description, and copyright information in the image file while in PS. iStockphoto extracts the information from the file when I upload it.
-
I use pixvue...
-
I do it the old-fashioned way...my trusty thesaurus. ::) Then I use cut and paste for descriptions that I use a lot.
-
I use IrfanView. It is really easy. You open the image, hit the "I" key twice, and then enter the IPTC info.
-
I use Pixvue. Right click in windows explorer and then enter IPTC data. YOu can also select a few photos at a time so when you save one, it automatically opens the next (unfortunately it doesn't populate with the same info).
I also keep track of all titles and keywords in excel.
-
I use Exifer for keywording in IPTC details
I finally found if you add the keywords individually like you are supposed to
iStock's imagemanager, 123,DT,PSM,Can,BigStock,StockXpert,FT, all are happy.
Though I found that if you spot a mistake and have to correct something with photoshop and resave the details are lost. :'(

Image optimization is optional. But it is good if you do that.
Guidelines for image optimization.
1. Include the keyword in your image name : Use name in image like web design.jpg instead of number and alphabet.
2. Separate Search engine accessible image folder
3. Use the "Title" attributes : Title attributes are a great way to add meaningful information about the images. Use it. Ex:- Title="Website Design Los Angeles."
4. Do not use the same ALT tags for two or more images on the same page.Do not use the same TITLE attributes
5. Use Limited number of images per page
6. Reasonable image file size
-
I use iTag....
Sets keywords, description and Title on one or multiple images at the same time.
Builds a keyword library automatically as you enter the keywords for the images, omits entered keyword if already in the library.......you can also build keyword strings and store them, example: "young Asian women" "winter landscape".
I used to use irfanview but when you can do multiple images at the same time productivity is greatly increased and its a free application,no ad's and no restrictions.

I use PhotoMechanic. It's very fast for previewing images and vectors, it has built in ftp, can import photos and has great keywording tools. You can also write structured keyword lists for the areas you use the most (or buy the list from controlled vocabulary) (http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/products/photomechanic.html).

I've used ProstockMaster for about 15 months, now. I'm very happy with the program.
Here is my referral link: http://www.prostockmaster.com/?refcode=2763 (http://www.prostockmaster.com/?refcode=2763)

Lightroom is a major omission from the choices...it's very popular and excellent.

Probably wasn't included in the poll because it was made 4 years ago in 2006.
Does this one win the record for digging up dead threads ?

Best captioning software on the planet IMHO - however come's at a heavy price.

In my former employment we were forced to use this. Never again.

I love the ability to copy and paste IPTC data.

Photoshop.

Prostockmaster

CushyStock (old version, and only for keywording)

Basically Exifer. If I need to add/edit a keyword in a specific position (like when I copy keywords from another similar image), I do that in Irfanview.

It does take some getting used to, but is unbeatable for captioning batches of images, then appending specific keywords.
Drives many people mad though!

I use ProStockMaster

Lightroom 2
-
I use an older addition of iViewMediaPro. Very easy to to generate keywords with.

Lightroom has proved to be the simplest & fastest way to keyword images. Most of all if you plan to save time use Yuri's keywording tool and embed the keywords in lightroom.
link for keywording tool by Yuri Arcurs.
http://www.arcurs.com/keywording/
Keywords should describe what is physically and prominently visible in the image. Try to avoid use of subjective words unless they are relevant to the image.
Always keep yourself in buyers shoes and think if you want to buy an image what keywords would you type to find an image. If you feel you would not use certain keywords avoid them. Hope this helps
Thanks,
PM

I am using Linux, so I do not have much to choose from.
For keywording, I use exiv2.
-
We use our in-house software, it fills the data like copyright and author automatically, spell-checks the title, description, and keywords, counts the keywords and words in the description, gets rid of duplicates, has an ability to sort keywords by priority, has an ability to detect if files have identical keywords... etc...:) and then you just drag and drop the files onto the software's window and fills in all the fields.
-
I use photoshop - put keywords at the end of image processing. Perhaps not the fastest way... Are those external programs mentioned in this thread able to add IPTC info to 16-bit TIFF files?
(I know IrfanView is very slow for that as it needs to open the file before I can edit IPTC so it would certainly not be any faster than photoshop)
Lightroom isn't my choice because it always sorts keywords alphabetically which isn't good for fotolia and possibly for some other sites.
-
I use PS it seems to do a great job. Interesting to see all the different ways!
-
the new microstocksubmitter software has a quick meta function for keywording. if you only upload 50 images per site each month its free and pretty reasonably priced if you upload more I think we should be supporting this software it is actively being improved every day
-
Bridge, pro stock master have also proved helpful
-
I use Yuri's keyword tool then apply in photoshop after post processing..
-
Depends and various, sometimes I use one to start and the other to finish. For quick changes I use Irfanview or Prostock Master. But the best for applying data to all fields that all agencies will read?
BreezeBrowser
It saves Legacy and Modern Adobe versions, at the same time.
Finding the words, I pretty much do that myself based on what people will actually search for, not a stretch of insanity that someone may be looking for inflatable, circular, pressurized, rubber, object, instead of just typing in Balloon? Come on, get real!
I still think people are kidding themselves with the obscure variations in their keywords. And like the seashells, bottles on a towel on the sand, with Red and other not matching words. The pictures sells because of the image, not because people are looking for something else and are taken by the amazing shot they found that doesn't match what they are searching for.
The best keywords are the simple truth.
I can explain it to any fisherman, or someone who has fished in hopes of getting that big catch. (hey kind of like selling photos isn't it?) The first question when someone shows a big fish is, what bait did you use? Somehow the success is attributed to the lure, not the skill of the fisherman. So others will go out and buy the same bait, because they will catch big fish with it.
Carry that down to people spamming keywords and making sales, so others think, if I add 100 keywords, I'll get more sales. But what's missing is What's In The Picture" how well was it shot? People don't sell junk photos they sell well produced, well lighted, desirable photos of subjects that buyers want. They don't see a photo because it has been keyworded with spam or all the words in the thesaurus that are close to what's in the image,.
So the new people buy the same bait, hoping that their image will sell better, but it's not the words and not the bait, it's the actual skill of the photographer/fisherman that makes the sale.
Nice camera, I bet it takes good pictures. ;)
Oh you have 50 keywords, I bet that image gets a lot of downloads? ???
It may be important to have good tools and knowing how to use them is next, but in the end, it's the technique for the fisherman or photographer that produces the results, not the BAIT!

I actually made one using 2 javascripts I found on the internet and coded it into an html page to serve as my keyworder. Course now I haven't used it for months and just use irfanview and type them all up.
-
I use picWorkflow (http://www.picworkflow.com) keywording interface of course ;) I used Lightroom originally.

Try PhotoStock, software for microstocks photography sellers, for editing IPTC. List of images in one place.
- copy and paste IPTC data

Yes, it's default. If somewhere is a bad translation, I fix it.

It's in another language for me. Because of the settings icon, I think Moznosti means settings right?

Try from menu Nastroje - Moznosti - Jazyk - Anglictina - OK and restart program
Second solution is delete config.ini from application folder...

Funny thing, me too and it's not one of the options?
Then I use Breeze Browser Pro to make sure the data is in readable format by all the sites.
I really REALLY need to start using Yuri's site too.
