They try to find a portfolio without seagulls, close up of leaves, lazy cats and macro shot of ants

If they examine pictures at 100% the way the micro's do, then Getty must be seriously re-thinking their deal with Flickr right about now.....

As someone else said at the time, the deal was probably meant to keep other agencies out. A move against competition, very much Getty Images style. Also please note if you paste a microstock url on flickr it gets disabled...

i cant see how it would work, the cultures different on flickr, its not about selling. I know a lot of artists that use flickr for their work. I'd assume a lot of people would opt out of selling, it would ruin the creativeness. I dont see this happening, especially when you have to pay for flickr anyway

Select Flickr users begin to get Getty invites (cnet)

the Getty Flickr partnership launch is March apparently
images will be licenced exclusive via Getty
standard Getty fee structure

Anyone know anything else? Anyone had an invite?

Threat to life as we know it or yet another great opportunity?

A friend on mine got an email invite from Getty from his Flickr account last week.  She has not told me the details as of yet, but we are going out shooting this weekend.  So I can say it is definitely happening.

Now I did not get an invite from them.  .  .

You can read more about it and get the point of view of typical Flickr members by going here.

Personally, I think it's a tad underhanded of Getty to be using Flickr this way. They aren't offering Flickr members the opportunity to become regular Getty contributors, instead they're picking and choosing the images they want for use in a special collection. Some people at Flickr are going to find the exclusivity clause of the contract problematic, but the majority will likely have a 'Wow, I'm stoked!" attitude.

I received an invite from the Flickr Getty Images Collection project this week for 70 of my photos on Flickr and I have to admit that I was pleased to be chosen.  I've been on Flickr for several years and posting there led me to microstock because a kind Flickr member suggested that a couple of the shots that I posted were stock (or microstock) quality and luckily the stock sites agreed.

Here's the details:

Commission structure - Royalty Free - 20% contributor, 80% to Getty.  Photos sell (depending on size) for anywhere from $85 to $300

Rights Managed - 30% contributor, 70% to Getty.  Photos sell (depending on size again) for anywhere from $225 to $700

Contributor must sign an exclusive for the Flickr photos you upload to them.  Even though the photos have been pre-selected by the Getty editors, they still have to be uploaded to Getty and reviewed for model releases, trademark infringements, etc.

They've set up a private Flickr group for invited members - at last count the group (which was launched late last month) has approximately 4,700 members (out of 30,000,000 Flickr users).

According to a couple of other people I've talked to who have received invites, many people had less than 10 photos chosen for inclusion.  But they did apparently go through my photostream - because some of the images they picked were uploaded two or more years ago.  They chose some people shots, some lifestyle shots, some landscape shots and a couple of wildlife images from my photostream on Flickr.

I've decided to accept their offer to join them and am submitting about 2/3rds of the photos they wanted.  The other 1/3 are either already for sale elsewhere or I don't want to go exclusive on the image at this point.

The Flickr Getty collection is supposed to launch at the end of March.  We'll see how it goes....
