Title: What if there are only subs, everywhere, tommorow?
Post by: melastmohican on February 10, 2010, 19:23
I guess it will not happen automagically over night but I think it is what future holds. Can we prepare for that? What would be a strategy? Joining forces and forming production shops that may supply enough volume to actually compensate for commissions going down?

I don't even want to think about that!  I prefer to watch the program about the end of the Mayan calendar at Nat-Geo

Why would that ever happen? Not all buyers spend $250+ per month on stock images, and it's not like buyers who spend $200 or less per month on stock images are suddenly going to go away. PPD will always be an in-demand buying option.

I would delete images from all sites.  No doubt about it.

The problem is that that heaviest buyers all opt for subs.

It would be a shame to tell my friends/familly that I sell pics that took me hours to create for 30 cents. I would do something else/delete all images

Delete all my images from all sites as well...I would rather sell prints at craftshows and fleamarkets instead...

It's not going to happen. Ever. Ergo it is utterly pointless to start a meaningless discussion or 'plan a strategy' to combat it.

What if ... they banned the car from tomorrow ... said we all had to wear green trousers from tomorrow ... made it compulsory for all teachers to be convicted paedophiles ... etc, etc, etc.

I don't know about you Gostwyck, but I thought this was a thread about "WHAT IF" no necessarily a serious discussion.

like it's been mentioned I also don't see subs taking over completely (at least not anytime soon) .. but  I can see the possibility of them taking the mainstream by offering more options in the sub business model that makes them a benefit to a broader range of buyer. I don't think a "mainstream sub what if" is any more unthinkable now than a "microstock what if" was in the not so distant past.

If that was to happen I would most likely drop the microstock portion of my photography business completely and just forget about it.

Hypothetical discussions can sometimes be useful or entertaining when they have some sort of realistic possibility of becoming reality. They don't have to be serious, but they at least need to be even remotely plausible.

This one falls into the category of "will never ever happen, not even a chance", so it's about as useful to discuss this as it is the possibility of meteors hitting all of the servers of all of the major stock agencies, simultaneously shutting them all down.

My biggest concern is when will iStock disable my NEVER checked images from they site which are they now available on some wannabe kind of Thing stokasite as cheap sub selling stuff.
How I can have control what they are selling thru other ways if they are not checked for this purpose?!?
They can sell my image at 100 dls times ratio and display me that image is selled only once or twice?!???)'(%#%'%#'

I'd spend a lot less time reading threads about people complaining about subs.  ;D

agencies will continue to push subs, but they won't leave the small buyers easily, so credits will stay

But what happens if we form a production shop and then an asteroid (or the meteor helix7 mentioned) hits the earth and wipes half of them out (the American half obviously because if anything ever hits earth it hits America, watch a movie if you don't believe me) we'd need a strategy for that too  ::)

Oohh I've just thought of a strategy, we should make Bruce Willis CEO, he'd know what to do.
