Hi everyone,
I'm sure a lot of you do paid gigs for families, seniors, newborns on the side ...
One of my past clients wanted to submit one of my photos I took of her children to a contest where they win money.

What is the normal protocol on that type of thing? She wanted me to sign authorization to let her submit it.

How do you handle it?

Some contests require the transfer of all photo rights including copyright ownership... just for submitting. Be sure to read the tiny fine print sections.

As long as the contest doesn't take ownership of the image for anything outside of promoting the contest or showing off the winners, who cares? Do you want her to split the money with you? It's "cutest kid", not "best photo of some random kid".

In my standard release:

Bearer agrees that he/she may not use any 'X Company' images for commercial or editorial purposes, or enter any 'X Company' images into competition without the express written permission of 'X Company.'

That being said, if there is a cash prize, you could request half in the written permission...
